Last year I tried to rent a car in England and was denied because I was over 75.

Do you drive standard transmission? Automatic transmission cars may be available but cost considerably more. How do you feel about driving on the left side of the road? Note, with a standard transmission you have to shift with your left hand.

Your title seems a little at odds with your post. Can you clarify if you are planning to drive or planning to take public transport?

I agree with Carol.

It looks as if you want to take your own car to England. Is that correct?

I would say that works fine if you come from Ireland.

Less fine - but doable - if you come from another place in Europe. The travel is not too long, but you have to be prepared to sit in the wrong side of the car in relation to the traffic. I have tried that some years ago, but because I was sitting in the left side I could not see around the car in front of me, so I couldn't see if there was any traffic coming towards me, so I didn't dare to overtake, so I was late for a meeting :-(

If you come from outside Europe, the travel might be VERY long.

Conclusion: I wouldn't take my own car to England.

We have rented a car in the UK twice, once in 2013 for three days and the last time in 2017 for four weeks.

Coming from the USA, the adjustment of driving on the left is a bit of a challenge, but you just have to concentrate on your driving and not drive aggressively. It helps that British people generally are polite drivers.

One of the biggest challenges to touring with a car is parking. We booked B&Bs or small hotels that had free parking.

We didn't do London in our 4 week tour and the largest cities where we visited were Cardiff and York.

It is pretty rare for age restrictions to be applied to car hire in the UK with the major companies at least, although some require certification to the effect that you are still a regular driver. The situation is somewhat different in Ireland and I sometimes think that USA agents may get confused between the two.

It was Hertz that had the age restriction.

Hertz does not have an upper age restriction corporately in the UK. Indeed they are car hire partners of Saga, who market products to those aged 50+. I can only imagine either you were mis-informed, or there was a rogue franchise involved.

If you are wanting to tour WITHOUT a car, it is fairly easy in England, Scotland and Wales. The trains cover a significant portion and are easy to use. Buses (coaches) cover most of the rest. We have been to the UK more than 40 times and have NEVER driven. We prefer not to have to deal with the 'complications'- 1) neither of us drives a straight drive and automatic transmissions are rare 2) Gas (petrol) is very expensive 3) Parking is scarce and expensive- many parking areas 'in' larger cities and towns are actually a rather far distance from the center. If you let us know the places you'd like to visit, we can make some suggestions.

This was on the Hertz website and was in black and white.

The original poster has never returned to clarify their question. I suggest we wait until we know what the question really is.

Hertz UK corporately have had no upper age restriction since 2004 for residents and possibly before then too (that date is significant as the issue was in the public mind at the time, and the policies of the day of the various companies are documented in many articles).

The only way I can possibly square this circle is that it could have been enforced sometime on other nationalities or non residents but I can see no reference in their terms now.

As noted above the OP has started a new thread and does not want a car.
