Self guided recommendations Cornwall St Ives to Penzance. Pros Cons. Any other personal experience?

We are planning a self guided trip from St Ives to Penzance in Cornwall. So many to choose from. Does anyone have any personal experience or locally owned companies in Cornwall that might be best with regard to best places to stay, support, inside recommendations, good communication and routes. Right now we are considering Mac Adventures. Thanks!

St Ives to Penzance is just a handful of miles so I’m not sure what you’re looking for - are you walking, driving or using public transport?

If driving, I suggest heading west from St Ives towards St Just, head to Cape Cornwall. Then to Sennen, then maybe stop at Porthcurno for the Minack Theatre then to pretty Mousehole en route to Penzance. But that can all be done in a day. Obviously longer if you want it to.

Simple to do that route by bus, too. It’s all very straightforward. Lovely part of the world.

The fact you’re asking for help organising a tour makes me wonder if you’re walking?

A bit more clarity would help!

Oh, I’ve just searched Macadventures and it appears they organise walking and cycling trips so I’ll assume you are doing one of those?

If walking, I imagine you’ll be following the SW Coast path so there should be no route issues - you’ll just follow the path around the coast. There are a lot of books and websites specifically for the South West Coast Path with advice on how to break it into parts, where to stay etc.

Are you looking for someone to carry your luggage or will you backpack it yourself?

This is a great starting point: https://www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk/

I can see the tour you mean on Macs Adventures- 6 days St Ives to Penzance. The first two days in St Ives, 3 days walking with the first night in Pendeen, and nights two and three in Penzance. Then day 6 just a travel day.

Personally I don't see what they bring to the party on this one.

You could stay all 5 nights in one place (St Ives, Penzance or St Just) and just walk with day packs using the coastal buses (either the Tinner or the Lands End Coaster) to and from end points. Three bases is extravagant and over complicated to my way of thinking.
BTW the Lands End Coaster bus is not open top this year- it is ordinary double deckers.

Hi Chris -

Try Encounter Walking Holidays. They appear to specialise in the south west, with emphasis on the South West Coastal Path. It’s been a while since I last used them and the company is under relatively new ownership, but they were very good when we used them and they’ll tailor a walk to your requirements, or at least they used to. Can’t harm to have a look!
