Self connecting at Heathrow Question

Hey there, I just have a question in regards to a self connecting flight at Heathrow (flights booked on separate bookings.)

I will be flying into London Heathrow in August from Nice France (Arrival 1340 hrs) British airways Terminal 5. I will then need to collect baggage go through customs/ immigration and then transfer to terminal 3 to catch 1750 hrs flight to Toronto Canada. I am wondering if this is enough time 4hrs to do this, or if this is going to be a close call.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jordan

Who knows ? It depends how lucky you get with your first flight departing and arriving on time.

No one can predict with 100% certainty what will happen on any given day.

If you do miss your second flight though, that is a pretty big penalty : I.e., you have to buy a new one-way transatlantic ticket on the spot.

It depends on how big your wallet and your appetite for risk are.

The Heathrow connections page will provide an idea of how long it will take. I believe it recommends at least 1.5 hours when changing terminals.

If your flight from Nice is on time, 4 hours is plenty. Even if it’s an hour late, you should still make your flight out. Perhaps check your travel insurance to see that it covers a missed flight through no fault of yours and make sure your credit card can cover buying a new ticket home if necessary?

Check the LHR airport website for information on how to transit between terminals and airlines..it would probably help to check in online for the Toronto flight before leaving Nice. I have done this type of transfer but pre-Covid and with no checked baggage.

I have an ETA as I will be in London (for the Oasis concert at Wembley) for a week prior to heading to France! Thanks for all the advice. I’m looking into adding a hour or two in between connections just for peace of mind.

For true 'peace of mind' why not book the Nice to Toronto as a single booking? Put the onus on the airline to make it work and not have to bother with your checked bag(s).

I am unable to do one single booking as my round trip flight out of Heathrow was booked long before the flights and trip in France were booked. But yeah in the future it definitely would’ve been helpful to have it all under one booking vs the “self connection” issue
