We want to spend the week of June 13 to 21 in the Salisbury or Wells area. We want to stay in a Bed and Breakfast with friendly, helpful hosts. We are over 80 and would like to find a knowledgeable guide who will take us around the historic sites as we chose NOT to drive ourselves "on the wrong side of the road!" Been there, done that many times in our 'youth'! Also would like to know if there would be Uber or Taxi service in that area? I'd appreciate any and all advice. Thanks in advance. Barb PS, this is my first ever post on this site.
welcome, barb, good to have you onboard.
Can't help with your first two questions - but there will certainly be taxis in and around both Wells and Salisbury. Uber, not so much.
Salisbury being slightly larger may be a better place to stay (sorry can't help with B&B suggestions.) There are day trips you can do by bus from Sailsibury - have a look here for some ideas. Stonehenge is easily done by bus. I also came across this company that runs day trips from Salisbury. They don't have their 2025 calendar on the web yet, but the 2024 one is here.
Salisbury Information Centre in the centre of the town is perhaps your best source of information and advice. They will have details of day trips from Salisbury as well as ideas of places to visit by bus or train. They will also have details of local taxi firms and may be able to help with information about B&Bs. You could try emailing them and ask questions before finally deciding to stay in Salisbury or go in and visit them once you have arrived. Staff are knowledgeable and very helpful.
Hi, Barb, it's been decades since I've been to Salisbury, but I did find a fairly recent thread on this forum that lists some good B&Bs and other places to stay. So you might want to have a look at that. Here is a link: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/england/staying-in-salisbury
