Seeing soccer in London

My family is traveling to London in April and would like to see a football game. I have learned that the Premier League games require a membership in the team, so those are out. I've looked at some of the Championship League games, but those don't seem to have tickets on sale yet. Can that be right? Is there a centralized place, something like StubHub, to see what is available?

thanks,
Laura

Not all teams require a membership to purchase tickets, some of the less prestigious premiership teams like Tottenham and West Ham often sell tickets to the general public. The most popular resale site in Europe is Viagogo.com. But be aware that if a team requires membership to purchase tickets you still need that membership to purchase on resale sites.

You have to buy tickets direct from the relevant club. NEVER use a ticket reseller for a football match. There is no central site as most people just want to watch their team play, so buy direct from there.

Some of the bigger clubs do require membership and season ticket holders get priority. Premiership matches often get moved from Saturday to a Monday evening to fit the tv schedules, so these matches aren't confirmed until around 3 weeks before the match. Championship matches don't tend to get moved and tickets will be more readily available.

The season ends mid April, so the last day will be more difficult to get tickets for if the team you are hoping to see is involved in a possible promotion or relegation battle.

Tickets are usually on sale about a month in advance.

Hi Laura,

Would you be able to provide exact dates for when you are in London? If you can provide those I can find which games are on while you are there.

In regards tickets, I reiterate what Jennifer says - NEVER buy tickets from resellers. They're often fake, and if not greatly inflated in price. If you aren't looking to go to a PL game you shouldn't need to buy from anywhere other than the club, anyway, and depending on how far down the pyramid you're willing to go you can potentially just buy tickets on the gate.

viagogo is not a fraudulent site. They have official relationships with top clubs like man city and chelsea. If you can get a membership from chelsea, viagogo is an official and 100% legal re-seller recognized by the team, league and government.

I was able to buy tickets for Tottenham vs. Liverpool last October when tickets went on general sale. I just set an alarm to wake up at the moment tickets went on sale and found two tickets. They were in the same row and there were a couple of seats in between, but it worked out just fine.

Okay, the games in London the weekend of April 2nd are:

  • Arsenal v. Watford (PL)
  • West Ham v. Crystal Palace (PL)
  • Charlton v. Birmingham (CH)
  • Fulham v. MK Dons (CH)
  • QPR v. Middlesbrough (CH)
  • Bromley v. Lincoln City (NL)

Be aware that these dates are subject to change due to TV rescheduling. No danger of that with Bromley, but the other games might. That said, when CH games are moved they're often moved to an earlier kick-off on the same day.

Fulham are very popular with foreign visitors, and there shouldn't be any trouble acquiring tickets for that game. Charlton wouldn't be a problem either. You should be able to purchase tickets on the home team's website and print them off at home. You can pay at the door for Bromley if you decide to go down that route, but I doubt you will.

I saw a Tottenham game at White Hart Lane. I got the tickets through StubHub. It was fine.

A few teams have a relationship with StubHub, just like they do with Viagogo.

You can always find a ticket; it's just dependent on how much you feel like paying.
