See Football in September

My research shows Premier League tickets are too expensive and hard to get. But the lower level league (Championship League, I think) could be good. Any thoughts? and particularly how to get tickets? Would want to travel to stadium from Covent Garden in under an hour by tube / train. Staying for the month of September so can go to a game any time.

Most teams offer online ticket reservations through their website, but some teams you can just buy tickets at the entrance.

What day specifically are you looking to go to a game?

I'm also going to be in London in September and have been looking to buy football tickets as well! I agree that Championship League tickets are a lot cheaper. I've had my eye on Brentford F.C. as their stadium is close to Kew Gardens. In order to get tickets, I signed up to be a team supporter (it's free). Tickets for the weekend I'm there aren't on sale yet, but they are selling tickets for games this month. I would suggest you pick a team to see and check out the ticket buying section on their website. I'm also thinking that those games are going to be a lot less popular, so it should be easier to head to the box office when you're there and get a ticket. I hope an English football fan chimes in with more advice! I'm very interested in hearing what they suggest.

You have your choice of Brentford, Queens Park and Millwall. Check to see which team is at home during your stay, you should not have to purchase tickets in advance for any of them (unless it's compulsory nowadays?). I was at Millwall's ground, The Den, many moons ago, it was quite an atmosphere.

Ticket prices for the top league are now ridiculous, similar to our hockey tickets. I lived in Britain for two periods as a very young man. The last top flight game I watched was at Old Trafford in 1980, United versus Spurs in a cup replay. It cost £1.50. I root for The Mighty Stags, the best team there ever was.

RE Beth, Brentford have quite a small stadium for the league they’re in, so they’re probably a little more difficult to get tix for, though certainly not impossible. If it does fail though, look at QPR, Millwall, Charlton, Wimbledon, Barnet, Dagenham or Leyton Orient. Reading is also an option as it’s only a short journey out of London.

Just to clarify, it’s Queens Park Rangers, not Queens Park, who are a very different team based in Glasgow

I posted this question several years ago.Mxed in with the usual responses was the suggestion that you purchase a ticket to see the Southampton team when it plays at home. Unfortunetely it's something like a three hour train ride in each direction. That's what I would do instread of paying an outrageous price on the secondary market.

Thanks for the info akkejakke! I wanted to see QPR, but I believe that they’re out of town the weekend I’m there. I need to check out the other teams you mentioned and see who is there when I am. Sadly, I’m a Tottenham fan and they’re out of town during my visit. Even if tickets were super expensive, it would have been worth it!

I'd respectfully disagree with the recommendation to watch Southampton, they are a side with a mediocre fanbase and the atmosphere is generally quite average. Now their rivals down the road, Portsmouth FC (Pompey) have some of the best and noisiest fans and the atmosphere at Fratton Park is quite impressive, even Jose Mourinho thinks it's better than Old Trafford...

And let's not forget Pompey vs AC Milan, an atmosphere like no other!

Skip to 3.43 to see the first goal.

You can take your Premier League teams and their corporate boxes, for a real football atmosphere look at the lower leagues and with Pompey within an hour's train ride from London it makes for a good choice.

Can’t help but think you’re biased, JC... ;)

St Mary’s is a horrible venue though. No identity or atmosphere to speak of.

Beth, are you there the week of the 29th? If so I’d recommend Leyton Orient v Sutton United. Great stadium and fanbase and a local derby too.

"Barnet, Dagenham or Leyton Orient" - you'd have a hard time getting tickets to see those teams in the Championship.

Akkejakke, I am there that weekend! Thanks for the recommendation for the Leyton Orient game. I’ll check into tickets for that one. I can’t wait to see a soccer game in London.
