East End tour

Just returned from the RS week in London tour which was great. I had also booked a separate tour during free time (3.5 hours) with eatinglondontours.co.uk which was terrific. It's a walking tour of the East End with stops at 8 locations to sample various foods where locals eat, and all outstanding. While this is a 'food tour', the East End history presented by our guide Nicole, was exceptional. The focus on this tour was the influx of immigrants over the centuries and their influence on commerce and food in this area of London. Please note that this tour needs to be booked ahead, and there are only 12 spots on it. 2 tours daily if I remember correctly. This company also has tours in several European cities, and I hope to book them in the future!

Terry,
Thanks for sharing. I'm bookmarking the site and adding this tour (or Twilight Soho) to my list of possible things to do in London. Though (at least in my opinion), the price makes it a splurge, it seems to be one that has high value as well.

Nicole - you're correct, it is a splurge however I thought it was well worth it. I don't travel to shop so my expenses are saved for activities that aren't available where I live. The small friendly group, great guide, and wonderful food made for a terrific half day. My sister and I then spent the rest of the afternoon just wandering through the streets/lanes/alleys and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was a nice change as I had reached burn-out of the big box tourist sites.

Thanks for the great recommendation! I love food/history/culture tours! It looks to be a great thing to do and experience. Because of your review, other reviews found on the web and the info found on the company website itself, I have booked a spot during my time in London this summer.

Kathy - I'm sure you won't be disappointed. I didn't know what to expect as far as the food was concerned having not read anything about the various dishes that were included. I'm tempted to list the dishes, however I don't want to spoil the surprise for you. I will say only this: Bread and Butter Pudding...WOW. Had I stayed in London longer, I definitely would have returned to several (if not all) of the restaurants! I admit I had hit the wall on the typical tourist stops after a week, so the East End tour was a welcome respite from the typical. Oddly enough I chose it because of a PBS program I watch called 'Call the Midwife' which takes place in the East End. Enjoy!

Thank you for the recommendation! We are thinking about taking this food tour when we are in London in September. We took their Eating Italy food tour last year and loved it! They also have food tours in Amsterdam that look great too! I agree it can be a burn out on all the big sites! Our Rome food tour was a highlight of our trip to Italy. Can't wait to see the real Soho. And did you say Bread and Butter Pudding! Sign me up!

I have been PMing Terry about this tour, which looks great. In addition to the morning East End tour, they now also offer an early evening Soho Food Tour. It would be easy to schedule one or both of these onto a blank schedule, but it is more difficult to fit one in to a week's tour that is already heavily scheduled, especially given that the food tours are not available every day, and sometimes fill up well in advance. I have also scheduled a Cambridge Food Tour for the day I arrive in Cambridge in mid-June, with a local Cambridge tour company.

Hey Terry!
I love Call the Midwife too! Isn't it great how a TV program can spark a further interest in learning more about an area, culture, history etc.? I am happy that I booked this tour and I am debating whether or not to book the Soho tour too.

pfresh3 - I'm so glad you mentioned the Rome tour and that you enjoyed it. My niece has booked it while she is there on the RS 14 day Europe tour. She booked it based on my experience with the company in London so I'll be sure to tell her it's highly recommended too.

Kathy - Isn't the show wonderful? Walking through the neighborhood gave me a new appreciation of the East End that's portrayed on the show. The guide, Nicole, brought to life the difficulties that were experienced by the people that lived there in the 50's and 60's.

Thanks to your posting Terry, I will be taking the Eating London evening Soho Food Tour a week from right this minute! I leave early tomorrow morning, and as my packing is about 90 per cent done already, I may just get a night's sleep before departure. Cheerio!

Larry - I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time! I know that the Soho tour has only recently been added, and it would be greatly appreciated if you would post your comments about the experience. Enjoy!

pfresh3,
I just bought my ticket for the September 17th tour!

I reached out to the authors of the blog Bruised Passports and they emailed me a promo code for a discount on the price.

Their post about the tour experience (http://www.bruisedpassports.com/wheres/eating-london-food-tours) is a good read. They also have a lot of other interesting blog posts, and amazing photos, related to their travel adventures.

Nicole - So glad you decided to book the tour - be sure to share your comments (and your favorite restaurant/food) as I'm sure others will follow! Thanks too for sharing the link - a discount would be terrific. I wish I had known about it, but I don't really regret my cost (well, maybe a little...) as it was a great tour and others can now share too.

Hi Terry,
I saw there was a box for promo code when making the reservation and figured I'd try to track one down. I would have booked the tour at full price if I couldn't find one though. The reviews I've read, beginning with yours, have all indicated it's well worth it. I'm pretty excited.

Thanks for the info on the promo code! I need to decide on what day to sign up soon before they sell out. We are thinking about taking the Twilight Soho Tour. Looking forward to Larry's review of the tour!
