Will the views be more scenic with seats looking to the east (on the right side of the train moving from south to north), or looking to the west (on the left side of the train)? Traveling mid-day. Thank you.
Last time we did the train, sitting on the left was ideal. As we got closer to Newcastle Upon Tyne, it started raining heavily, though, so views outside were limited on both sides of the train.
East, but really there’s not a whole lot to see other than the stretch between Alnmouth and Edinburgh
Taking LNER from London to Edinburgh, I really enjoyed the views from the right side of the train. But I've found regardless whether heading north or south, or sitting on the right or left, there were plenty of nice views as I watched the countryside go on by.
I can’t remember if it was York or Newcastle but you can see an interesting cathedral sitting on the right. On my return I took a direct overnight train and rented a sleeper car and would do it again.
Thanks for all comments so far.
Things to see on the right side include Durham Cathedral and the White Horse on Sutton Bank
It iss Durham Cathedral that MaryPat is talking about.
Agree with sitting in the right side as that also gives the best views of the Northumberland coastline once past Newcastle.

Maybe that's what I saw.
Sometimes, sitting right next to the window can make your view worse, not better, as you can only look out of the window next to you. If you sit on the other side of the train, you can look through several windows, and can know what is coming into view. Think also of the time of day and month of year of your journey. If the sun is strong, this can make sitting by the window uncomfortable.
MaryPat - see the picture here.
Wasleys – you took that photo, that is awesome?
No, it's not my picture. I found it on google as I wanted a picture showing the cathedral from the train.
Definitely right side. Durham's lovely, but particularly good view as you enter Scotland and head from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Alnmouth - you can see the sea, and it's amazing.
Definitely agree with Simon. The highlight of the trip is from Berwick upon Tweed to Ayton on the east side of the train.
Thanks again, everyone!
