Saving on Flights - Double Round Trip?

Rick - I love your books! Thank you.

I had a quick question for the community. I've been trying to find cheap flights and stumbled onto cleverlayover.com. From what I can tell they book two roundtrip tickets and they send you to kayak.com to do the actual bookings. It showed a $340 savings for my flight which intrigued me.

Few questions:

  1. Has anyone used cleverlayover before?
  2. Should I have any concerns with booking two roundtrip tickets?
  3. Would love any other suggestions people have.

Thank you and happy travels!

Why don't you give us some hint of what you are thinking about so someone can do a little comparison. Not sure why two RT tickets would save $340. Are you trying to do an open jaw ticket?

Thanks for the quick response Frank. I'm trying to fly from Atlanta to Rome 4/18 - 4/26. See this link for the search I ran. Really appreciate the help!

firstly, I have never used nor heard of these people.

But I have always been a bit of a skeptic and I do wonder how the airline makes a profit, Kayak makes a profit, these new people make a profit, and you still save $340?????

I've usually been of the opinion that if it sounds too good to be true it may well be.

I hope for your sake that they are on the level and really are there to save you money...

"Thanks for the quick response Rick."

Rick Steves doesn't answer the posts on here.

The other thing that confuses me is that you are trying to reach Rome for the layover, Pisa enters into it, yet this thread is posted in the England Forum.

How does England enter into it?

I don't get it. I just tried putting in a mythical booking from my home airport to Madrid. I clicked on the first result, which was a one-stop on KLM. When I was redirected to Kayak to do the booking, that choice did not even appear. And I don't understand the concept of booking two round trip tickets for one trip. I am also a little suspicious of the pop-up wanting my email in exchange for a chance to win an Amazon gift card. It says it's "to celebrate our launch", which tells me that they have not been in business long. I never book through Kayak, anyway, always directly with an airline, so I would not trust this service to be yet another layer between me and my flight.

The principle is that instead of buying a simple return ticket between A and B, it can be cheaper to buy tickets between A and C and C and B. Very familiar concept to anyone booking rail ravel in the UK ...

... main problem with airlines is that if you arrive late at C you might not get on your flight to B as you are on 2 tickets. Also no hope of interlining bags if you want to.

This site comes up with some very convoluted routes to save not very much on my tests. Not to say on a particular route where the point to point is expensive that it may be worth it.

Ah, thanks, Marco. I get it now. I have done similar on a couple of different trips. Twice I have taken a round trip, bought on a great deal, to London instead of my final destination, Madrid. Once in London, I took a budget flight to Madrid, then back on another budget to go home. It can save a LOT of money, but it does have the limitations that others have mentioned - possibility of too tight a connection, no interlining of checked bags, etc.
