Salisbury Lodging

Hi, I've received much excellent advice regarding my trip in October, including many recommendations to use Salisbury as a base for 3-4 nights. I'm liking this idea and are now looking for lodging in Salisbury. I've searched the forum and there is not a lot there, particularly as it looks as if many of the entries are dated and some of the facilities may no longer be in business...and also, it appears from looking at TripAdvisor for hotels/B&Bs, there may be a lot more now than in the past.

Can anyone suggest a decent place to stay - if it has a breakfast, that would be an added bonus.

Thanks for the help.

I haven't stayed in Salisbury since before Covid but.....here is where I've stayed in the past and where I will probably book for my next stay there.

Rose and Crown - I stayed here on a Rick Steves tour in 2018. I liked the location but got there in a heat wave and my small single was pretty hot. There were no fans available. It was in the old portion of the hotel which was neat. Awesome breakfast. Beautiful location on the River Avon but about a 10 minute walk to the cathedral and maybe another 5 to many restaurants. At that time the hotel was a venue for parties so it was pretty loud with music and a DJ until midnight as there were weddings both nights I was there - a Friday and a Saturday. My brother and SIL had a room in a new wing and heard no noise at all.

Mercure White Hart - I stayed here on a Road Scholar tour in 2016. Rooms were huge but the door locks were finicky. Breakfast was OK. It was a better location than the Rose and Crown in that it was just steps away from the City Center but not as picturesque.

Best Western Red Lion Hotel - I have not stayed here but walked back into the courtyard on a couple of walking tours of the area. It looks really cool, lol and this is where I plan to stay next time.

My favorite bed and breakfast closed during Covid when the owners retired, darn it!

In 2021 we stayed here https://www.stayatpeartree.com/ and were very happy. It is right by the train station and a quick walk to the main area.

We have also stayed at the King’s Head Pub (Wetherspoons) and had a perfectly decent, well-located room.

Salisbury is great! Try to find time to take the walking tour with the tourism office early in your stay as it is a marvelous orientation.

Great suggestions from Pam and Laurel!
I especially like The Rose And Crown on Harnham Road, as mentioned by Pam.
We have stayed there several times and liked it.
The oldest part of the building was built about 1485 but it is updated (LOL) and has some new additions onto it. Some of the rooms overlook the river in the back and across the water meadows you can see the spire of Salisbury Cathedral.
One thing to know when booking a room; if you have any walking or balance difficulties, you will want to ask for a room along the front hallway, as those are walk right in on a flat and level floor. The rest of the rooms involve either going up some stairs or going down some tiny steep stairs into a bedroom.
Great breakfast. And the breakfast room/dining room has a lovely view over the river and water meadows.
There is ample parking for cars which some hotels in town may not have.
There is a short walk to the cathedral and town. You would walk about 3 to 5 blocks to reach the catherdral; walking over a medieval bridge over the river, then up the street and turn left down a quiet lane of houses, then turn right to walk into the Cathedral Close.

The Red Lion Hotel was built in the 13th century as a place to stay for the workers who built Salisbury Cathedral. It's in the center of town, which is convenient for catching the bus to Stonehenge. Check with the tourist information center about buying a bus ticket. You can either include Old Sarum admission or not. Old Sarum is a stop on the return bus ride from Stonehenge to Salisbury. It was the original location of the town of Salisbury. Not much there now except the foundations of the old buildings, but it is interesting. The oldest version of Salisbury Cathedral was moved from there to its present location.
I am unsure whether or not The Red Lion Hotel has a car parking lot.

Having looked at The King's Head it is surprisingly good value for a centrally located hotel. Wetherspoons Hotels are a budget chain but are a significant step up from Premier Inn (and both of the PI properties in Salisbury are on the edge of town), and a comparable price if not cheaper.
Like Premier Inn breakfast is not included but at the prices I can see for selected dates that isn't a problem.
Just buy the tour bus tickets on the bus, or on the Salisbury reds website.

I stopped in the White Hart Hotel a couple of years ago and enjoyed the stay. It had a lot of character with sloping floors and creaking floorboards. It had a lovely old fashioned feel to it and hasn't been 'made over' into a bland corporate identity. It was getting a bit shabby in places with chips to the furniture, but that all adds to the 'shabby chic' feel. Be warned there are a lot of steps up or down into bedrooms.

I took the RS South of England tour in July. In Salisbury we stayed at the Rose & Crown Hotel. It was my favorite hotel on the tour, actually the whole trip. I loved the old quirkiness, wattle & dab wall construction (displayed behind glass), timber beam framing, old doors that went nowhere but used as decoration.. Since my room was at the end of the corridor, it could be a little loud from people walking by, but the noise died down by bedtime. Easy walk to the Cathedral and nearby museums, and just slightly farther to pubs and restaurants.
And yes we had breakfast., buffet style.

We've stayed twice at the Wyndham Park Lodge B&B and loved it for the kind host, excellent breakfast cooked to order, and pleasant rooms. It's a short walk to town.

Salisbury has an ancient restaurant you might want to try, Haunch of Venison (sp?) where we had a beer in the snug little room up front. That's where we met the inspector we'd seen "hanging" outside the steeple at Salisbury Cathedral! (A little concerning for onlookers but it turned out he was meant to be there with safety harness etc.)

There is a splendid bakery on the Market Square (2 years ago, anyway) ..if you like churches you might see the old church, St. Thomas, I believe, with the large doom painting.

Salisbury has the beautiful water meadows as well as meandering small rivers, and we're so glad we "reached the heights" during the tour of the higher levels of the cathedral. Enjoy!

I've booked this morning for 4 nights in October at the White Hart for £265 bed and breakfast, which I think is a pretty good deal (albeit as an awards member with Accor- but you can just sign up for free to get that rate), quite a bit cheaper than the other hotels mentioned above, at least for my dates.
I had been looking at staying at the Premier Inn, Southampton Airport (the best value PI in the area for my dates) but they were £43 a night + £16 a day for breakfast (airport rates), so there is a negligible difference in price to get a full service hotel, and the airport was a bit out of the area I am visiting, on a Cathedrals trail.

Greetings, thanks to all of you who responded to my Salisbury lodging question. I so appreciate it. We have a booking at the Rose & Crown for early October. Looking forward to some quiet time after the hustle of London.

Thanks again for taking time to respond. The forum is fantastic!

You've made a good choice. I think you will enjoy your stay there.
One additional note--The Rose and Crown dining room serves dinner. We chose to eat there all of the nights we stayed there. Excellent fish and chips, shepherds pie, steaks and more; specials each night.
It was very convenient for us to have a nice dinner and walk right down the hall to our room.
Enjoy Salisbury!
