Rye - hotel recommendations

Hi all

There was a recent thread where a few posters recommended Rye, so my wife and I have decided to visit, and spend a couple of nights there over a Fri/Sat/Sun in mid-May. Some context - we're in London, mainly for work and family visits, 4-5 times a year and have traveled widely in the UK, but haven't been to Rye before.

We love historic hotels, preferably fairly small, and are looking for a nice relaxing weekend out of London. No hustle and bustle, no particular agenda. We like historic architecture, churches, small shops, antique/charity shops and nice pubs.

Budget is max £300-£400 a night. I did look at this place, which looks good:

Any thoughts and recommendations welcome. We won't have a car, so need to be central.

Either would work and are definitley central. They are both about 6 minutes walk from the railway station.

The Mermaid is a lot older, and on a narrow cobbled street. The building dates from the C15th and has smuggling connections as well as a ghost. It is possibly a more 'atmospheric' building.

The George is on High Street, the main shopping street, which can get quite busy with cars during the day.

Both get good reviews on Trip Advisor.

That's, that's helpful. I'm leaning towards the Mermaid for the atmosphere....

Sadly it turns out that on the day of our proposed departure there's work on the line, and rail replacement buses, which i cant be bothered dealing with, so we've decided to do our trip the day before as a day trip. But I will keep the Mermaid in mind for a future visit.

That's too bad, but you can still have a drink or lunch at the Mermaid!
