Royal Albert Hall Classical Spectacular

I’m not a shill for the Royal Albert Hall nor the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

However I do know a great way to spend an even in London in late November.

In all my travels to London I’d never been inside the venerable Royal Albert Hall. That changed as I was planning last year’s November-December sojourn I received a TimeOut London blurb featuring the Classical Spectacular.

Booked a ticket for my first night following my arrival from Lyme Regis.

The show was brilliant An absolutely stellar two hours of music, dance, lasers, and fireworks. The entire evening was bliss.

So sharing this first hand account for any travelers who will be in London between Nov 22-25, 2018. Worth the price of admission.

The link below is official.

I know I mentioned this before and merely throwing it out into the London Travel Forum universe again as tickets go fast.

Have fun!

We went to this a year ago when our BnB hosts cold not use their comp tickets (she does tours there) and gave them to us. We had a blast. For those who are familiar with this from PBS pledge-casts, it was a light version of Andre Rieu. And, yes, real cannons in the 1812 overture.

The Royal Philharmonic performs several of these crowd-pleasing events. I saw them pound out a selection of movie themes on a happy Saturday afternoon. The opening of Star Wars with that brass section? The Empire seemed not so far away!
It's worth taking the guided tour before the show, to understand this unusual forum (with a glass roof that escaped WW2 bombing). Eric Clapton has played there 200 times but some early-20th-Century classical musician, now not famous, holds the record.

it was a light version of Andre Rieu.

How is that possible?

Nigel do hope you are able to go! Great fun.

Wanted to add this little amusing bit of info about the Royal Albert Hall. When I returned to the states I was lounging and noticed Hitchcock's Man Who Knew Too Much was on the TV. Vaguely recalled that the final scenes were in the Royal Albert Hall.

Indeed they were with Doris Day ready to scream as the assassin takes aim......but what made me smile was the reality that except for the sound spheres hanging from the ceiling to improve acoustics, the place remains the same. I'm sure there's been paint and polish since Hitchcock filmed in 1956 but honestly it looks exactly as what appears in the film. A great legacy for one of London's most distinctive and well known pieces of architecture.

One of the fabulous treats to be had in London are the Christmas offerings at the Royal Albert. We went all in last year in December and attended two wonderful performances plus a marvelous high tea. We book early via the internet and get the close seats in the stalls, up a bit to get the best views. Royal Albert performances are hands down the best Christmas programs we've ever attended. Offerings are listed sometime in late September or early October. Don't miss out if you'll be in London in November or December.
