Road trip from London to York

Hello! We will be traveling from London to York via car in June and I would love some advice on scenic drive routes as well as a suggested halfway stop for lunch. I realize that taking the train is much faster however, that is not our plan. I thank you in advance.

I’m going to take a chance and say that the single response you’ve received to your enquiry is possibly because there isn’t a lot of exciting scenery on the main roads between London and York, just the usual pleasant green countryside. The 2 main roads are the M1 and A1(M) highways, which are usually very busy with lots of roadworks, and ordinary scenery that you don’t really see because you’re concentrating on the traffic. Be aware that the roads in the UK are generally much smaller and busier than in the US and driving anywhere takes much longer than you expect. For instance, it once took me 5 hours to drive the 200 or so miles from York to London, partly on the back roads and partly on the motorway, just because of traffic and roadworks. Of all the longer journeys in England, this is the one that I’d do by train and then pick up a car in York for further travel.

I can’t speak for the scenery, but wouldn’t Leicester make a good stopping place? Especially if you’re interested in history. It has the tomb of Richard III, Leicester Cathedral, and a lot of interesting stuff there. And it’s pretty much right at the halfway point.
