Road trip advise - London to Bristol, where to go in between? how best to travel?

We have only three days of travel time between leaving London and flying out of Bristol. We are fairly open to destinations, but had hoped to include Bath and Stratford-upon-Avon. Other than that, we've kicked around lots of ideas such as Oxford, Cotswold drive a bit, etc.

Any advise? Also trying to figure out best car hire plans. Rent London/Drop Bristol? Or rent somewhere else and drop Bristol? Or even train to Bristol, get car and do a circle trip from there. One way rentals on the car might be expensive.

Any suggestions or advise would be greatly appreciated. Been researching this for a while and just having a hard time figuring out the best way to approach this given our super short trip and not really knowing the geography well.

Thanks!

We did this in reserve and visited Bath and Woodstock. We visited the Cotswalds from Woodstock and also spent a day in Oxford while traveling to LHR to drop off the car. We then took a taxi into London.

The places you mention could be covered by car from one central base. I would suggest that Cirencester would be suitable. If you click this link - you will see it near the centre of the map with Bath at the bottom and Stratford-upon-Avon at the top. The Travelodge at Cirencester would provide suitable accommodation - unless you wish to go upmarket.

Bath and Oxford are not easy for parking/driving. Best to go to one of the Park & Rides on the outskirts - where you park the car and take a shuttle bus to the centre.

Consider taking the train (from London Paddington) to Swindon and then hiring a car. This will save you from having to drive out from central London.

Bath's core area has very crowded traffic with restrictions at some times. The locals park in satellite lots on the edge of the city and take a shuttle into the centre. The train, however, arrives right downtown.
