River Thames tour, bus tours London

We are going to be in London at the end of July. We thought a River Thames boat tour might be fun way to spend an evening. I've searched trying to find a company to use but just not sure which or how long a tour could/should be. Is there a specific tour company you would recommend? I'm thinking one that is an hour or two would probably be long enough.

Also I guess I have the same question for a bus tour. My husband has gone on a hop on/ hop off tour there before and liked it. Is that something we need to buy tickets for ahead of our trip? Also, a specific tour company you would use? We thought for our first full day in London that might be a fun way to take in some sights and then spend the following days going into museums, palaces, shops and touring parks and gardens.

Thanks!

Do you have a guide book for London yet? If so, great. If not, we purchased a RS London Guide Book to use in planning for our trip to London in June and found it very helpful. If you need one, the RS book can be ordered elsewhere on this web site. aloha charlie

My friend took a HOHO (hop on, hop off) bus tour. She liked it, but you have to be aware that they can get stuck in traffic. If I took one, my preference would be to stay on for the loop.

I have taken a couple of river tours, from Westminster to Greenwich and back, and Westminster to the Thames Barrier and back. Only one tour goes to the barrier, Thames Barrier Cruises, I think is the namd and City Cruises is the more popular one. They're all in the same location at the docks near the Houses of Parliament.

I don't think you need to buy tickets in advance for either boat cruises or the HOHO buses. A boat ride from Westminster Bridge to the Tower lets you put yourself in the place of the many people who found themselves on that ride (non-motorized) after losing the king's or queen's confidence, or worse, back in the day.
