My husband and I will be seeing a play at the Gielgud Theatre on Sept. 19 when we're on a Rick Steves' tour. Any suggestions where we could eat dinner before the play? We like casual places, ethnic food, nothing too fancy.
The Palomar, Cafe Espana. A sushi place across the street. There are countless restaurants near the Gielgud.
There's an Italian restaurant either opposite the theatre or a little way down towards Piccadilly Circus called Fratelli Bufala, which I quite like.
Just don't be tempted to an Angus Steak House. If you see red leatherette booths, run the other way.
You'll love "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night". It is one of my favorites.
There are dozens of restaurants in Soho with nearly every cuisine imaginable. Here are a few casual places that I have enjoyed:
Vinoteca on Beak St. http://www.vinoteca.co.uk/soho/ Wine bar with bistro style meals. Menu changes daily, lots of great wines by the glass, I've eaten here several times and food is generally very good and a good value for London.
Barrafina on Frith St http://www.barrafina.co.uk or Dehesa http://www.dehesa.co.uk on Ganton St. Spanish Tapas. Barrafina doesn't take reservations and depending on night of week can have quite a queue. Dehesa takes reservations and you can book online.
If you are looking fo something even more casual and less expensive, there are quite a few chains (Busaba, Masala Zone, Wagamama) nearby as well as many small eateries. Both http://www.timeout.com and
http://www.hot-dinners.com
are good sites to check restaurants and reviews.
5 minute walk from Arbutus in Frith St to the Gielgud Theatre.
Casually elegant with interesting food, they have a very good value pre theatre deal, £25.00 Fixed Price 3 courses

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! Mary
