Restaurant Recommendations - London

I'm staying about 2 weeks in London in the hub by Premier Inn London Covent Garden.

Can I please get some moderately (*) priced restaurant recommendations?

Back in 2017 I went to an indian restaurant that I enjoyed. It's think it's close to Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus. I think it's part of a chain, maybe there were three or four more in London. It was very busy, a long line to get in. I don't think they took reservations, The dining area is pretty big. Does anyone know the name of this restaurant?

(*) $$ or $$$ in google reviews

Probably Dishoom - great food, cool experience but rather noisy (not a problem, but just something to be aware of if anyone in your party has hearing issues).

The Indian restaurant was probably Dishoom. They're excellent.

Other good restaurants are thick on the ground in London. I personally recommend Polpo at Beak Street and Emilia's at St Katherine Docks. Both serve superb Italian food at a price that is, for London, quite reasonable.

You're probably thinking of Dishoom, which is pretty wonderful. They do take reservations (usually) for breakfast and lunch, but not for dinner. There are several in London, including one in Covent Garden. https://www.dishoom.com/covent-garden/

Also, here's a page from the Covent Garden website that lists many of the unique restaurants in that area. You might enjoy scrolling through it to see if anything catches your eye. :-) https://www.coventgarden.london/eat/restaurants/

I forgot about Cafe in the Crypt, which is a restaurant that sits below St. Martin-in-the-Fields church just off Trafalgar square. Not officially Covent Garden, but very close and the cafe can't be beat. It's been there forever—I first ate there back in 1996.

The cafe has very good food at a very reasonable price. The food is served cafeteria style, so you order your food, then take it and sit amongst all the tombs lying on the stone floor. If you don’t mind eating among the dead, it’s a great place to have lunch. :-) I was there in April of this year, and ordered the beef and ale pie, which came with gravy, carrots, braised red cabbage and a green salad. It was quite delicious.

I really do recommend this place and I always enjoy eating there.

It might also have been Masala Zone, another nice chain (good for thali). I think there’s a couple around Covent Garden & Piccadilly Circus.

We loved our stay at that hub last year. Here are the restaurants we enjoyed. I would book ahead wherever possible, even just a day in advance:

  • Dishoom
  • The Ivy (head up St Martins Ln, at the corner of West and Litchfield Sts)
  • Cote Brasserie in Covent Garden
  • Notto Pasta Bar in Piccadilly
  • Koshari Street Egyptian street food on St Martins Ln
  • Honey & Co in Bloomsbury

On my list for next time are:

  • Cafe Murano in Covent Garden for the set-price lunch menu
  • La Mia Mamma (2 locations in Chelsea, one in Notting Hill) .

We loved our dinner at Rules. Classic British fare and the history! The prince used to take his mistress there. Go upstairs.
