I am looking for a special occassion restaurant for a 70th birthday. We have a party of 6 with diverse diets from omnivore to vegetarian and a vegan. We will be staying in west London and our trip is in mid November. All adults, no children.

We enjoyed The Shed in Notting Hill. Countryside chic, small and large plates, emphasis on local and wild farm-to-fork sourcing. We liked the cozy atmosphere and really excellent food, and it's a short walk from the Notting Hill Gate station so no car needed. Website: theshed-restaurant.com

My favourite special occasion restaurant in west London is the River Cafe: https://www.rivercafe.co.uk/
Amazing Italian food, right on the river near Hammersmith. Definitely book in advance if you want to go. I'm not sure how they cater to vegans, would be the only issue. They might be able to make some dishes vegan?

Cote is one of the better chain restaurants in the UK but no way would I class it as a special occasion place. It's not remotely in the same league as the River Cafe.
But equally it's not in the same budget either. Unless your budget is restricted to the level of Cote you should be able to do better. If Cote feels right for you there are branches closer to West London than the one Claudia recommends. Exactly where depends on your location.

I agree Cote is absolutely fine but I wouldn’t class it as a special occasion type of restaurant.
Where in West London are you staying? There are lots of restaurant options in Chiswick Richmond, Ealing etc.
If you are happy coming into the centre of town Brasserie Zedel, right by Piccadilly Circus is worth a look. The room feels special but the food isn’t overly expensive. The food is French but it does have vegetarian and vegan options. I used to regularly meet a friend there who is vegetarian and she never had any problems. Vegan options will likely be more limited but I think that will be the case in most restaurants unless they are specifically veggie focused.
It also has a nice cocktail bar and small music venue if you want to extend the night.
