We would like to go to the Isle of Wight on June 29, leaving from Southampton. We will have a rental car. Should we make reservations for the ferry?
If you know when you are going, why not book? Check your car hire company will permit you to travel on a ferry without invalidating the insurance.
Yes, make a reservation. If you know you're going on that date then it makes sense to do so. We're going in early May and I've made our booking already. There is a limit to how many vehicles will fit on the ferry and be mindful that it's a big island with lots of commercial traffic being ferried to and from the mainland along with people who work on the mainland, it's not just tourists making the journey.
And have a stiff drink before you look at the price! Don't know if it's true but I've heard it said that it's the most expensive ferry price per distance covered in the world!

Yes, it is true but thanks to Tesco Clubcard rewards our ferry crossing with car cost me only £20.
Yes I used my club card vouchers too (great for euro tunnel too) but IIRC only one of the frperry services accept them and we arrived and departed at different terminals so there was still some pain to absorb!
Fortunately for us it's the Wightlink ferries that accept the vouchers and as they're Portsmouth based it's very convenient.
