My wife and I are beginning our planning for a 4-5 week stay in the UK during Sept 2020. We are searching for a 2 BD room 1 1/2 bath (or larger) apt/cottage outside of London, near the Tube line (no plans to have a car). All recommendations GREATLY appreciated! Harold & Marly
The VRBO, AirBnB and HomeAway and maybe London Connection websites should have a plethora of possibilities to research.
Simply remember to stay in Zones 1 and 2 so your daily travel into and out of London travel costs don't break the bank.
One neighborhood I've come to appreciate was Ealing. I also thought the Chiswick neighborhood an interesting suburb of London.
Wish I had a specific accommodation to recommend but I don't.
I stayed in Ealing years ago at a B & B and really liked that suburb. Great restaurants and the Tube ride wasn't too long.
There are plenty of nice areas to stay way out on the fringes of the city but I'm just here to say that I've done this and, in the long run, it won't save you much. The tube getting into the city center from the outer zones will become quite expensive. Try to stay in zone 1-3, otherwise your transport costs will add up quickly. Try looking out towards Tufnell Park, Highgate and Hampstead Heath in Zone 2-3...very quiet neighborhoods that I particularly like. Just 15 - 20 minutes to the city center via the tube depending on where you want to go.
Zone 1-8 adult daily max travel will cost about $10 more per person than zone 1-3 travel; zone 1-5 adult travel max will cost about $5 per person more than zone 1-3 travel. Check out https://tfl.gov.uk/ for specific fares and journey planning.
Travel times will also be longer, obviously, the further out you stay. You should also determine how many visits you plan to make to central London. IMO, you would need really good savings in your accommodations to justify the increased travel time and cost.
