renting London apt - how are these areas?

Hi! Thanks for all the advice so far!! :)

I have been pouring over vrbo looking for a semi-reasonable rental.... I have a bunch more requests in, but so far I have 3 responses, all very close in price and sleeping arrangements. I am wondering if anyone knows about these areas.... are there nice pubs, places to grab food? Is it safe? Thanks!! I will reference what tube station they say they are near...

  1. Willesden Green, very close

  2. Belsize Park 5 mins walk, Swiss Cottage 10 min the other way

  3. Between Kings Cross and Angel

I have also seen quite a few near Aldgate East, but haven't heard back yet.

So, someone who knows London - what to do you think? Oh it is me, husband, and boys 10 and 12.

Thank you!!!
Kim

Our London/UK regulars are probably still sleeping.
Look back here in a couple of hours or in the morning.
Happy travels!

I agree with Emma that Willesden Green might be too far out. Belsize Park/ Swiss Cottage is closer in, but it's a largely residential area that will have fewer places to eat than a more central place.

Kings Cross/ Angel is a very, very patchy area. I probably wouldn't know enough to be able to advise, because it can vary on such a small scale. I would strongly recommend using Streetview to observe the property, and the streets near to it, and the route to the nearest tube station.

Aldgate East would probably be similar, although if it's on the City side of the area it's probably OK.

I have a couple more too - I will link them, but if it's too much hassle to look at them, that's ok! I do really appreciate it - I know San Francisco's kind of the same way. We have some places that some people may not mind staying as it's kind of hip, cultural - but I would not since I find it a little sketchy. And things here can change drastically by the block, so I understand! :)
Thank you!!!!!!!

I agree with emma and Philip (sorry for the heat, emma), and feel that we need a bit more precision.

There are a lot of areas between Kings Cross and Islington I wouldn't want to wander around in at night, to say nothing of the day; equally there are some alright ones.

Certainly agree with the above sentiment about Willesden Green.

It is so important in London to look at the immediate vicinity, and the walk between there and the Tube, and there and the markets.

Some places that were very down at heel have gentrified, some that were decent have become less so.

If places seem to be unusually inexpensive there may be a reason.

Well they are all about low $200's per night, so not super cheap, but definitely not expensive for London.

Do you mean Willsden Green as it is far out there, or that areas around it are sketchy?

I put the links to the maps of each that show where they are located - I figured that is easier than me trying to describe it since I don't really know the area....

Thanks!

OK thanks everyone - we picked the Belsize park one. The area looks really cute. I did the street view as recommended, and it was helpful. None of them looked horrible, but we liked the Belsize Park one the best.

Thanks!!

I would love to stay for a while in Belsize Park.

Easy access to Primrose Hill, can always walk downhill to a tube station, plenty of buses. Nice neighborhood.

St. Catherine's Dock is a fantastic location, worth a visit even if you're not staying there. Mentions a food market on Friday's, don't know about that, but it's not too far from Borough Market (next to the Shard) and that's a really exciting food market there all the time (closed Sunday's). Not cheap, but worth it. The restaurant there called 'Roast' is apparently fantastic for... er... Roast! (Sunday Roast as we call it, regardless of the day you actually eat it). Again, not cheap, but worth it, so I'm told.
