I just found an ideal apartment to rent for my family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teenage boys) in Docklands on Commercial St. Trying to decide if we will regret being too far outside the city as we are there to see the sights. It looks like we are close to a DLR stop. Any input?
I've stayed near London City Airport and taken the DLR; it's easy to connect to the tube and the sights. But in your location you'll be able to visit Greenwich easily and go further east to see the Thames Barrier.
Commercial Street is not that near any DLR station. Do you mean Commercial Road?
Both of these are not in "Docklands" as most people would say but in the traditional core of the East End east of the City. This area is being gentrified at present but still has some dodgy bits. I wouldn't suggest not staying there at all, but I would suggest that you not stay there if you don't come from a fairly big city already.
Commercial Road is also a major traffic artery, so there will be lots of traffic noise if you are there.
Thank you, LeeB. That's helpful and I think may make the rental seem like
a good move:)
Philip - thanks for your input. Yes, I did mean Commercial ROAD. We are from Southern California and frequently travel, so the traffic won't bother us. Should be fine with the area having some dodgy parts as well - the apartment looks perfect and is by a grocery store. Thanks again!
Sounds like a plan. Happy travels!
I'd strongly advise looking at google earth or google streets in the immediate vicinity of your proposed location, as well as the route to the DLR station (Shadwell? or another?).
Nigel - thanks. I did and started looking around some more. For the same price we can stay in a flat near Portobello Road in a much friendlier looking neighborhood. So, we switched. Thanks for your reply!
