Reminder of Nationwide Train Strikes Wednesday and Friday

Just a reminder of the big train strikes on Wednesday the first and Friday the third of February.

Both the RMT and ASLEF unions are walking out so train companies are expecting even fewer trains to run than on a normal nationwide strike day, with several companies saying that absolutely none of their trains will run.

Plan B is a way forward if you must travel on those days, but best advice is not to try.

Expect fewer trains and confusion on the day between, Thursday.

Companies involved are:

  • Avanti West Coast

  • C2C

  • Chiltern Railways

  • CrossCountry

  • East Midlands Railway

  • Gatwick Express

  • Great Western Railway

  • Greater Anglia

  • Great Northern

  • London North Eastern Railway

  • London Northwestern Railway

  • Northern Trains

  • Southeastern

  • Southern

  • South Western Railway

  • SWR Island Line

  • Thameslink

  • TransPennine Express

  • West Midlands Trains

Hello Nigel, I have seen several of your posts advising of upcoming train strikes. We will be in the UK from mid April until early May. Are there websites where I can inform myself of these upcoming strikes? We will be traveling exclusively by train, and I would like to be prepared to change plans where/if need be.

no and yes. You can read the British newspapers online. The Metro and Evening Standard are both free (the Metro even comes with an online puzzle section). They will headline when new strikes are announced. https://metro.co.uk/tag/strikes/

You might get overloaded since pretty much every day new strikes are announced. Not just in relation to strikes on trains (Feb 1 and 3) but you will see stories on strikes of NHS nurses (Feb 6th 7th next ones) elementary teachers, lawyers, Border Force (passports and customs at airports), NHS ambulance crews (Feb 6th and 20th), secondary school teachers, university lecturers, civil servants (Feb 1), London Buses (certain routes Feb 1,2,3), Tube drivers (Bakerloo Line Feb 4 and 11),

If you are mainly interested in one union you can go to their websites.

If you want a (not always proactive) overview of upcoming industrial action on railways the National Rail Enquiries website often has a banner at the top of the homepage.

But no, no central source of info, no app. Nothing like the French C'est la Gréve app.

Or you can continue to check here because we've got the C'est le Nigel app, lol!!

Always accurate, weeds out stuff a traveler doesn't really need to be concerned with and updates as conditions change!

As always, thank you Nigel for the information!

Thanks Nigel! I have bookmarked that site to check on while we are there. You are right about overload... so many strikes listed. But wearing rose colored glasses can be dangerous :). I will keep an eye out for your posts as well.
