Reminder of Nationwide Train strikes tomorrow, Saturday 30 July

Well boys and girls - it is crunch time.

Talks today failed.

No reprieve because government (Grant Shapps, Transport Minister) won't allow settlement.

Expect 20% or fewer of all scheduled trains to run tomorrow and none or almost none on Saturday.

As an example, see what London Northwest Railway is saying,:

Due to Industrial Action taking place on Wednesday 27 July and
Saturday 30 July, our services will be heavily impacted.

Wednesday 27 July

Routes with a limited service between 7.30am - 6.30pm are:

Northampton - London Euston (2 trains per hour) Birmingham -
Northampton (1 train per hour) Birmingham - Crewe (1 train per hour)

There will also be no trains running on alternative routes.

Saturday 30 July

No London Northwestern Railway services will run on any other route,
including:

London Euston - Crewe Birmingham - Liverpool St Albans Abbey - Watford
Junction Bedford - Bletchley

Morning services the day after the strikes will also be disrupted due
to displacement of trains. Please check before you travel.

I'm not making a political point - it is a fact. He has blocked direct settlements.

and that affects our travellers on holiday here.

I guess I will see what happens tomorrow. I am headed from Durham to York and had a TransPennine afternoon ticket. I asked at the station when I arrived yesterday (and got my ticket printed) and the person there said that TransPennine ( who never sent an email nor can I find anything posted) would not be running but that I could use the same ticket for LNER, with a couple of options. Just show up. I figure it will NOT be optimal travel, but the bus was going to be 4 hrs instead of 1 hr. I can do many things for just an hour….. if not, I will make a new plan. :)

You mentioned August. Have they announced August cancellations already?

Inflation in Britain for the 12 months up to May of this year is running somewhere between 9% and 11%. The RMT Union offered to settle for a 7% raise. The train companies offered 3%. That does not even allow the employees to keep up with inflation of the last year, much less have a higher standard of living.
That can hardly be called “greedy” as the second post above claims.
The point that the Government has tied the hands of the train companies to negotiate at the bargaining table is a fact.
The claim that one is greedy because one won’t accept a 3% raise is an opinion- and one that rings rather hollow in view of the facts.

Even on a a non-strike day you're lucky if Transpenine Express runs.

I have been following your strike threads Nigel because I will be taking the LNER train from Edinburgh to London Kings Cross on September 11. Hoping I don’t encounter problems. I will also take public transport to Gatwick airport on September 15

LOL, Frank.

I actually decided I didn’t want to worry today, so just bought a new ticket on LNER for earlier in the afternoon than I was originally scheduled. I decided in the grand scheme of things £10 was no great loss, if I do lose it.

A number of trains were running London to Edinburgh - just not in the evening. The LNER train I was on Durham to York wasn’t crowded and I actually got an extra afternoon in York out of it. :)

Reminder - zero or very small numbers of services tomorrow on Greater Anglia, Great Western Railway, Heathrow Express, Hull Trains, LNER, London Northwestern Railway, London Overground, Southeastern, Stansted Express and West Midlands Railway.

Also affected Heathrow Express and London Northwestern even though their staff are not striking, because of the lines they run on.

Curious to hear the experience of anyone who ended up traveling 30 July, especially in instances where the rail company is saying that limited service will be available. I currently have tickets 18 August, traveling from Bath to London via GWR. I tried unsuccessfully to find info on the schedule that operated 30 July to see if any trains ran on that route that day.

I have checked back to 30 July and GWR did indeed run trains between Bath & London. It looks like these were hourly whereas normally they are every 30 minutes. So, with half the normal number of trains on the route they could be well loaded despite the call for people to only make essential journeys. See >

See this from the GWR:> https://www.gwr.com/strike

It looks like these strikes are going to continue as the unions are being inflexible. For example, highly paid train drivers volunteer to work on Sundays - presumably a hang over from Victorian times so they could go to church. If an important match takes place over the weekend - a lot decide not to volunteer - despite bing paid more money for Sunday working. This is no way to run a railway. The employers wish to make Sunday a normal part of the working week.

Thank you James - I had read the info on the GWR site, which gave me the sense that some limited service was still operating, but seeing the confirmation from the historical info is comforting. A crowded train that runs is still better than no train at all!

The 18 August is an RMT strike. There would be expected from past experience to be more GWR trains operating than for an ASLEF one. Still no more than hourly with late starts and early finished though.

"Unite the Union" union has just announced that they will be striking at Network Rail (the folks who provide the rails for the trains to run on and who control the signals allowing trains to run) the same two days as the RMT.

This makes those two days much more perilous.
