Recommended restaurants near Trafalgar Square

Hello all,

I will be doing the Rick Steve's Westminster Walk in London in a few weeks and we end the walk at Trafalgar Square. Can anyone recommend good restaurants in that area? Also, has anyone heard of the Dennis Sever's House? Is it recommended?

Thank you,

Brigitte

You can go to the Cafe in the Crypt in the basement section of Saint Martin in the Fields. It's an interesting setting (yes, it's actually in the crypt) and the food was pretty good. It's self serve stations so pretty casual.

If you want something with table service there are literally dozens of places within a few blocks. From Saint Martin in the Fields, head up St Martin's Lane (I like a small fast food place here called Koshari Street but it is probably not what you are looking for unless you are vegan or Egyptian, lol!) or over to the Covent Garden area and have a look.

I agree that the Cafe in the Crypt is good for lunch or dinner. The adjacent gift shop is very nice without the usual the non quality items found in most shops.

Maiden Lane just a block or two off Trafalgar Square has a number of options. Polpo (reservations recommended but sometimes you can get lucky walking in), a tapas place called Condesa, Franco Manca for pizza, I think there’s a burger place...Also Rules for something fancier.

"I know a lot of people on this site like the Crypt in St Martins in the Field but in that area it wouldn't even be in my top 50 places to try. I'm not saying it's bad, just not as good/interesting as other places to try"

To me the interesting thing about this cafe is that it's in a crypt. I've never seen a church in the US with a crypt. Not saying there aren't any...but just that I can't think of any. In fact the oldest structure in Idaho is the Old Mission which was built in 1848. No crypt. I also love seeing that this church is a vital part of the community with not just worship services but concerts, the cafe and other outreach programs. So...I don't necessarily go here for the food but for other reasons.

There is a restaurant in the crypt - or at least the undercroft - at St Pauls, in addition to well respected toilets (got "Loo of the Year" a few years ago) and a large gift shop. Air vents in the ceiling/floor allow hearing of what is going on above.

Lots of cathedrals and churches in England have eating establishments under the church.

"Lots of cathedrals and churches in England have eating establishments under the church."

And yes, laughing, I always seek those out. Have also stopped at signs for "Jumble sale in the crypt" as well.

Oh my word, Emma! What a great story about the spuds, lol! And a 13th century shop front. Wow. See? Now we need to do a Tour d'Emma, haha!

Yes, I figured the crypt would not be a draw for you and wondered if you had a childhood church and whether it had a crypt as well. Growing up with that being a very matter-of-fact portion to the church would take the interest out of visiting other crypts with a basic food service, lol! Very interesting about your Harrow church.

I know you guys are sometimes appalled at us going ga-ga over things you see as routine. All I can say is you are welcome to come visit North Idaho - we do have moose in the yard in winter and might be able to conjure one up for you!

Recommend Bocca di Lupo, Italian tapas, very high quality and good service. Probably need reservation but we made dinner reservation two days before and got a place a week ago. 12 Archer Street a bit north of Trafalgar Square maybe 7 minute walk from National Gallery.
