Recommendations for train travel from Liverpool to Windsor in mid September

After visiting 2 days in Liverpool we are heading back to London to complete our tour. We would like to visit Windsor. Should we head directly to Windsor from Liverpool by train and spend 1 night there, or go back into London and take a day trip there? If we spend the night in Windsor what would be the train station closest to the castle and a hotel? We are 3 seniors and looking for the route that would be the easiest and most direct. We have 3 remaining days left to spend before we flying home. We have been planning our trip and it's almost complete. Thanks for your suggestions.

I would just go back to London and then arrange a trip to Windsor. The easiest way to get to Windsor will be through London anyway.

If you can leave Liverpool early in the day you could drop your bags at a hotel and get to Windsor on the same day. The train from Liverpool should only take a little over two hours.

Another alternative would be to leave Windsor until your last full day and stay there for the night before taking a taxi to the airport, but this only makes sense if you’re flying from Heathrow.

Well the most direct route is Liverpool Lime Street to Birmingham New Street on London North Western, Birmingham New Street to Reading on Cross Country, Elizabeth Line to Slough, Great Western to Windsor and Eton Central.

It normally costs an arm and a leg to go that route (via London is way cheaper),
but if you buy this as 2 Tickets- Liverpool to Birmingham and Birmingham to Windsor then travel from Liverpool on the 0833 or 0908 train, and the 1103 from Birmingham it is £11.50+ £37.40 each (£48.90 total) Advance Fares on those specific trains only- the 0833 looks the better train to me.

possibly the simplest route is get off your train from Liverpool at London Euston, go out the front of the station and cross Euston Road to bus stops H or P, take the bus number 205 (links many train stations) to Paddington, train to Slough, change to the little shuttle train to Windsor and Eton Central.

Or take a short taxi ride to connect Euston and Paddington.

Or walk a couple of hundred yards from Euston to Euston Square Underground and take a quick westbound either Circle Line train or a Hammersmith and City train to Paddington (whichever comes first).

Thank you for your suggestions. After much discussion, I think we'll plan to go to Windsor the day before we leave London and catch the train from Paddington. I like the idea of taking a 20 minute cab ride to Heathrow for our departure to end our trip. Your suggestions were all very helpful.
