I will be visiting Dartmoor National Park for 3-4 days in late July. Does anyone have recommendations for towns/villages bordering on the Park? I am particularly interested in places to stay where it is fairly easy to get public transportation to the beginning of trails or other places of interest. Thanks!
How are you planning to get there? If by public transport then the following places all have railway stations:
Okehampton (on the northern side) or Ivybridge on the south. There is also Buckfastleigh which is on the South Devon Heritage railway and you would need to get a train to Totnes and pick up the steam train there.
You may find this website useful for information about getting around without a car.
Thanks very much for the advice! The link to the transport page was especially helpful--I have it saved for future reference. I did find lodging which will work very well.
Where have you decided to book?
As said before, Ivybridge to the south and Okehampton to the north both have train stations, and there are some others such as Bovey Tracey and Launceston which are both on bus routes.
There is also Moretonhampstead within Dartmoor which has bus services so that might be worth a look
I found a small hotel+campground in Okehampton just at the edge of the moor; bus from train station stops across road from hotel.
Thanks again for all the information
Sounds great Annon - have a wonderful time!
