I stayed in Jury's Inn and Motel One. Both are very close to train station and Waverly Bridge. About 5 minutes walk to Royal Mile. Motel One is actually hotel. Costs about $100, Jury's Inn about $200. Comfort about the same. Not upscale but fair to good.

Hey Stephanie, you posted this in the England forum. Edinburg is in Scotland. :)

You should be able to find a place though with that budget. Prices increase though in August when the festival is on. So if you are planing on traveling in August, you'll want to book soon to get the best location and deal.

Edinburgh is not a big place--much, much smaller than London. You can stay in the Old Town area--Grassmarket and the Royal Mile both have hotels that you might consider--Premier Inn, Radison Blu, Ibis etc. (Post on the Scotland forum and you'll hear for sure!) One thing to bear is that the Grassmarket has a lot of pubs. I don't know how noisy it gets. You're right you can also stay in the New Town area (new in the sense that it was built in the late 1700's and not medieval times). There are some well known hotels in that area. The George Hotel is where my parents honeymooned years and years ago, and it's recently been re-done. I think that even with specials the Balmoral is out of your price range, but back up over the bridge in Old Town, The Scotsman is likely in range. You can walk up to the Royal Mile, or take a very quick--5-10 minutes--bus ride and then walk back. It's a bit longer ride to stay where I often have stayed out by The Royal Botanic Gardens at the Inverleith Hotel. But again, I bused up and generally walked back. I would go up to New Town for dinner or down to Leith.

http://edinburgh.frasershospitality.com/en We stayed here a few years ago. Brilliantly located, half a block off the Royal Mile just above St Giles. The rooms are wonderful and immaculately clean, there is a fabulous bathtub, the dining room serves a good breakfast. Honestly, we found it a great value and a random weekend night in April is below your budget
