We will spend 4 days in York this April and The Rail Museum is one that I was really looking forward to. I’m reading that a section of it will be closed all year. Will there be enough left to see?
Yes, there will be plenty to see. It looks like the royal carriages will not be accessible which is a shame as I found them quite interesting, more than I thought I would.
It is just Station Hall with the royal carriages, travelling post office, dining car and some locos that will be closed. The Great Hall with the wonderful collection of locos will still be open. (Actually I've always found this more interesting than the Station Hall) There's definitely enough to make the visit worthwhile.
Although the museum is free, please give a donation!
The rail museum is a delight to experience even with a portion of it closed. Definitely worth the time to visit, especially if the weather is not cooperating.
Wonderful, thank you so much for the advice. We are really looking forward to York!
Don't miss the railway museum under any circumstance . On two visits to York , it was a highlight for a whole day on both visits . Its not just the trains , but all the memorabilia and history that are a major part . Watch this video from 1980 with Michael Palin , of Monty Python notoriety , to greatly enhance your visit " Confessions of a Trainspotter " - https://youtu.be/mYi1qLUAJJI
Musuems always have parts closed for various reasons, when I visited the Smithsonian's National Air and Space musuem part of that was closed, its an occupational hazard. I still enjoyed it tho'. Yes, a visit to York Railway musuem will be very much still worth the effort.
If your in the neighbourhood , at the museum, it is worth visiting the railway station as well, if only to go to the York Tap. It's a pub with a huge selection, but even if you don't drink the interior is well worth seeing (it's Edwardian)
York railway station is splendid - a good example of the status and importance the companies placed on their buildings. Do see if you can find the tile map showing all the railways lines on LNER. It is on the wall on the right as you enter the station. Very few still survive on stations now and it is amazing just how many railway lines there were.
Thanks steven, that was just great!
Dave ,Thanks for the note , I'm glad you enjoyed it .
