Rail trip from London to Brighton

Hi,
I'm taking my 84 year old Mom to London in September for 2 weeks .Thought we might take a day trip to Brighton. I looked up rail times & prices, appears there are MANY, different rail companies and prices. We are staying near Russell Square . Any suggestions?
Also could we get a set time ticket down and open time ticket back?
Are buses easy to get from station down to beach ? Saw it was short walk to beach but if Mom tired might need to take bus. Appreciate any thoughts,
Thanks,
Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Brighton is lovely; you'll have a fabulous time!

Southern railways operates a fast journey to Brighton from Victoria Station. If you can commit to a specific train now, you could find a fare for as little as £5 each way. You could also buy a DaySave pass; this allows you to travel anywhere on the Southern network with ultimate flexibility for £15 each. As you buy your tickets, it might be a good idea to add on a PlusBus...this allows you to ride on the Brighton buses like you have an unlimited travelcard. There are certainly buses that go from the railway station to the pier, so you'll be alright there.

Your basic choice is between First Capital Connect, which goes from Kings Cross (nearest station to Russell Sq) and Southern from Victoria. You can get tickets which permit all services or one company.

You can get an set time ticket there and an open one back ... but it wouldn't make any sense as it will cost you more than buying the open time cheap day return.

For example, on FCC a cheap day return after 9:30 weekdays is £16.40, whereas one way would be £16.30.

FCC don't do advance fares anyway, but Southern do as the poster says above. The disadvantage is needing to travel to Victoria.
