Rail fares frozen in England until March 2027

I just got an email from Railcard that said that all standard class tickets, including season, off-peak, and any-time fares, have been frozen across England until March of 2027. This also applies to Scotland fares on ScotRail (visit https://www.gov.scot/news/scotrail-fares-frozen-for-12-months).

I'm not sure how this applies to other people, but I thought it was interesting and for anyone planning trips, it would be good to know that there won't be a fare increase until then. 😊

First class and standard premium tickets are excluded. For more information, visit here: https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/faresfreeze/

This was announced several months ago Mardee, although understandably you were unlikely to see it. Train fares have been rising by a percentage above inflation for years now and this is a small action to redress that at a time of financial difficulty for many. Note that it doesn't apply to TFL fares in London, which have risen recently.

And in Wales- https://www.gov.wales/freeze-tfw-rail-fares-next-year

Advance (cheap train specific) fares are not regulated, so are not frozen, they are rising in price. some quite significantly.

Technically ranger (1 day) and rover (multi day) tickets are not regulated, so could have risen. In practice they haven't, they are also static.

John, that makes sense. I figured that the Brits probably knew about it already, but I thought I would post it anyway, just in case anyone's planning a trip later this year and is thinking about rail prices.

Stuart, good to know about Wales, too.

Either way, I guess it's a good thing—now if they'd only apply that to airlines! 😂

It’s probably not that much of a good thing because it likely means the cheap advance fares are going to go up quite a lot to compensate. Overall it will get more expensive to travel by train for the majority of people.
