We will buy a 4 day Britpass but do we need to purchase rail cards for shorter day trips from London?

One would normally choose either a BritRail Pass or the discounts offered by a Rail Card but not both. The BritRail flexi version for 8 travel days within a month costs about $140 more than the 4-day version, depending on your age bracket, if you'd have a use for that many days, including a last train ride to an airport.
As I mentioned on one of your recent threads, same-day roundtrip tickets are usually discounted already. Some also earn you discounts on the attractions you're going to see (https://www.daysoutguide.co.uk/), though many of those are for travel to London.
