Quick Trip From Oxford to Bampton

Hello,

My kids and I will be traveling in southern England for a few weeks at the end of May. We are staying just one night in Oxford, but I am wondering if services such as Uber are widely available/utilized in that area, since I would like to get over to Bampton for a quick visit to the Downton Abbey sites (Highclere Castle will not be open and/or is sold out while we are in the U.K.). I know there is a bus (#18, I think) that we could take, but I'd love to just pop over quickly and driving would be much more efficient, taking only about 20 minutes it looks like. We won't have a car; using trains instead.

Thanks for any and all assistance.

There are plenty of private car hire firms to choose from - no need to wait for Uber to start up. Reportedly Uber applied for an operator licence for Oxford in 2015 but have not yet met the necessary requirements.

Be prepared for this journey not to be cheap though - £80-90 return at a guess.

It's about 20 miles, but you take all A roads so it's a 40 minute trip. Taking Stagecoach bus line 18 bus would £18 (55minutes) taxi £60 or higher one way (40 minutes). I would suggest taking an early bus, walk around, take pictures, have lunch in a cafe and catch a bus back when you are ready. It would be a lovely day.

Thank you. I will look further into taking the bus if we have time, since businesses like Uber are not yet in play. Appreciate it.

The awful Uber isn't available there, but as mentioned above there are plenty of private hire companies in Oxford, and have been for decades.

I would expect that your hotel would recommend one or more minicab (private hire) companies.

It will be, as suggested, very expensive.

One of the reasons Uber says it is intending to start in Oxford is the number of times its app is opened on devices that can be traced to be located in Oxford. As discussed before, Uber is far less of an 'innovation' in the UK transport landscape compared with some other countries.

One of the reasons why this isn't a cheap fare is that the company is unlikely to be able to balance each leg of your journey with a trip back in the opposite direction with someone else so you are in effect covering both ways in the price.
