Questions about the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Train

We would like to take a journey on one of the steam engines from Broadway to Cheltenham Racecourse. I have a few questions about this day and would appreciate your advice.

  1. Our day trip would be in September during the week. Do you think we need to purchase tickets ahead of time?
  2. Is taking the Pulhams 606 Bus from Chipping Campden to Broadway (and back) good transportation option?
  3. Hayles Abbey Halt obviously has the ruins of Hailey’s Abbey to see, and I think we may choose to get off there, but are there any other stops that you all would suggest we alight for? Special tea spots, etc?

This looks like a really fun way to see some of the Cotswolds. I appreciate any feedback you have!

  1. No. It helps their cash turnover but there isn't much benefit to you.

  2. Yes - but ask the driver about stops, there is one called Caravan Park which is right next to the railway entrance but unless someone has forgotten to add details they only seem to stop on journeys from Chipping Campden, for the return you may have to walk a bit futher into the centre.

  3. Now we have a problem. Hayles Abbey Halt is rarely used, looking at their hopelessly overcomplicated timetable page it's just a few weekends and only with diesel trains.

Buy tickets on the day.

Checking the timetable none of th trains seem to stop at Hayles Abbey Halt nmid week in September. You can walk from Winchcombe along the the Cotswolds Way - it's about three miles one way. There's a map and information here.

If you do visit Hailes Abbey, it is also worth going into the adjacent Hailes Church which has some rather nice medieval wall paintings.

Also if you carry along the road past the abbey, you'll come to Hayles Fruit Farm which has a cafe.

Toddington Station probably has the most to see as the loco viewing yard, engineering workshops etc.

No, no one has 'forgotten' to add details. What actually happens is that on the way from Chipping Campden the bus has served Broadway first and is now on a one way journey to serve the village of Childswickham on the way to Cheltenham.
On the way back it has served Childswickham first, so you catch the bus on the other side of the road on the way into Broadway at a stop called 'opposite Football Ground'

Certain journeys on the route 1/1A from Chipping Campden (started at Stratford on Avon) also serve those stops- a 0945 (which serves the 'opp Football Ground' stop (heading towards Moreton in Marsh)

Service 1 back from the Caravan site stop runs at 1756 to Stratford via Chipping Campden.

My own modus operandi, assuming there are enough trains, would be to start at Broadway then stop off at each station, ending a Cheltenham Race Course, bus into Cheltenham then the 606 bus back 'home'.

So maybe Hayles Abbey will have to wait for another time if it doesn’t get an official stop for the day we’re there. I am sure we will have plenty of great things to see at the other stops!

So, and forgive me if this seems apparent, I just want to double check. If we were to take the Stagecoach 1A at 0945 ( pick up at the Noel Arms) we can arrive at Broadway at 1005? This one says the stop is Broadway, Opp Clock. Or the Pulhams 606, pick up at 0854 arriving at Broadway at 0913? Is the 606 stop adj to The Lyon Arms closest to the train station so we can walk to purchase tickets?

We then ride the train, getting off and back on (checking to see when there is another to get on) and go to Cheltenham and return on the Pulhams 606? If we make a whole day of it and go all the way to Cheltenham, which Cheltenham bus stop would be the closest from the train station stop for us to walk there? I see a 1720, 1725, 1727 departure from three different stops that would put us back in CC at 1905. Which would be the one to take?

Thanks for trying to help me plan this day!

From the Racecourse Park and Ride you take Bus D or E-
https://tiscon-maps-stagecoachbus.s3.amazonaws.com/Timetables/West/2026/Cheltenham/D_E_310526.pdf
to Cheltenham Pittville Street Stop 16
The 606 back to Chipping Campden leaves from the same stop (Stop 16) at 1720.

In Broadway your stop is 3 stops before the Clock (it's the first stop in Broadway). You go under a railway bridge at the station. Ding the bell (push the bell push) as you go under the bridge, and the driver will stop. In the UK we have bell buttons, unlike many buses in the US where you pull the chord.
So it should be at 1004.
The next stop is Lifford Hall at 1004 1/2, the Lygon Arms at 1005, then the Clock at 1005 1/2. (after the clock there are another 3 stops in Broadway).

If it was me, and subject to the overall train timetable for the day I would want to get off at the Lygon Arms or the Clock, have a look around the village and walk back to the station. However that may compromise the day and you will see the rest of the village as you come back on the 606 that evening.

My goodness! Thank you all for your help! Stuart, this reply will be printed up, including the PDF timetables and put in my plastic folder for transportation info. You’re a Godsend! We’ll play the day by ear and see where our interests take us, but this gives thread gives me all the information I need to do various options.
We are looking forward to this a great deal. The Toddingham Station looks particularly interesting with the shed tours and viewing area. Fingers crossed for a beautiful weather day for us, too!

Again, my deepest gratitude for everyone taking time for sharing their thoughts and advice!
