Question on London to Manchester to Liverpool Day Trip

Heading to London June 12-17 (as part of a broader Europe trip to Germany, Switzerland and Paris). We plan to take an early train on Monday June 16 to Manchester for a tour of Old Trafford (tours are not yet open past May - I think they don't open up for June and forward until after the current PL season ends). A good friend from Liverpool is adamant we can and should then head to Liverpool for an afternoon visit to the Beatles hotspots near The Strand area (oldest two kids are big Beatles fans) and that we can get back from Liverpool to London late Monday night.

For those in the know, is this logistically doable? I think the Old Trafford tour (one son is huge Man United fan - so the reason for that day trip) is maybe 1.5 hours - so if we get the early tour we're done by 11:30/12:30 - I would think we could get to Liverpool on a 2 or 3pm train and have 2-3 hours in Liverpool to explore specific area . When I map it out, it seems like it's possible but would love to hear from folks on whether this is something to consider, or too much to think we can pull this off.

We have an EURail pass - so trains/pricing not much of a concern.

Logistically it is possible assuming nothing happens, but is selling two great cities short.
This week I have had significant train delays to work around arising from two suicides, and three train failures from three different train companies. These things just happen, even if it has been an exceptional week.
If the Old Trafford tour starts at ten and you need to take a tram there from Piccadilly you need to be on the 0610 or 0629 from Euston.
If the tour is over by 1230 that puts you back at Piccadilly at soon after 1pm. You should be in Liverpool by or before 3pm.
Trains back to Euston every half hour with the last at 2051, arriving at Euston at midnight.
I think it would be prudent at the least to stay in Manchester on the Sunday night.

Thanks much - and i clearly get that i'm selling both cities short :) Would prefer to be able to stay at least one night in Manchester or Liverpool, but we have hotel in London 4 nights and with 4 kids and bags for a 23-day Europe trip, and a Sunday evening Romeo & Juliet reservation at Shakespeare's Globe, it's a bit tough to pull off. Thanks much though for the thoughts.
