Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend

I see we are going to be in London during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend (June 4-5).

Would anyone have ideas about how the events on Saturday and Sunday might impact the choice of tourism activities those days? Obviously taking in some of the events around this historic and unique occasion will be a great experience itself. But I assume it also means central London is likely to have restricted travel due to street closures (for example impacting hop-on-hop-off bus routes) and large crowds.

Thank you.

I don't have a specific answer to your question. However, as someone who took the Hop-on, Hop Off bus a few weeks ago as a rest break, I can tell you that even in regular traffic that bus is a bit of a nightmare. We sat in the front row of the top deck so we had an excellent view of the traffic situation. In retrospect it may be better to sit elsewhere.

It worked for us because we were simply using it to have a "sit down" break and still see some sights. It I were really trying to go from place to place I would never take that bus because it is constantly stuck in traffic. You can get many places much faster by using public transport.

We going to need some of the regular Londonaires to chime in on this one. My first guess is the the Queen's 75th is going to be a BIG deal will millions of folks present. I would expect it to be an absolute zoo. The tube will run but I would not count on any surface transportation. Good luck.

It is a Bank holiday from Thursday June 2 through Sunday June 5 celebrating a historic event. Central London will be jammed from Trafalgar Square down the Mall to Buckingham Palace- and beyond. Most of London’s major attractions are open during Bank holidays.
The place to be—if you can get anywhere near it— will be Thursday’s Trooping the Colour from the Horseguard’s Parade to Buckingham Palace. It will be a spectacular parade with British pageantry on display on a scale that’s not likely to be repeated in our lifetime as Queen Elizabeth will have been Britain’s longest- reigning monarch, having been crowned in 1952. St. James Park or anywhere on the Mall offer great viewpoints of the Parade which starts at 10am.

I think you are all overstating the impact of this
Most of us have very little interest in this

I very much doubt that will be the case. The Mall will be packed but that will probably be the only major impact. Outside of London there are predicted to be many street paties held up and down the country which will see many roads closed to traffic however these will all be in residential areas and are unlikely to affect tourists.

I'm pretty ambivalent towards the Royal Family and have no intention in taking part in any festivities, besides, I'll be in Barbados that weekend and considering its recent move to become a republic I don't anticipate much in the way of jubilee celebrations.

Inadvertently, I will be in London that weekend too. My hotel is in Soho, which appears to be fairly close to the Mall. Extra busy public transit seems inevitable.
I'll keep following this thread in case there are problems I haven't considered.

we're measuring from 1952. That's 70 years. Matches the traditional gift for the wedding anniversary - 70 = platinum...

I think you will be fine in London that weekend. I am actually meeting my daughter on June 5th in London and we plan on just doing the usual sightseeing stuff. Buckingham Palace will be getting ready for the concert on Saturday. But, if I can remember from the 2012 Jubilee, the stage is set up in front of the palace and will block the view of the Palace some. Other than that, I don't think the crowds will be bad that weekend. A little extra busy if the sun is out, but I don't think it is going to be crazy busy on Saturday as Thursday is the main event with Trooping of the Colour. Sunday, I think there is another parade down the Mall. So you may want to go and watch. I have always thought London has done well with crowd control.
