Pubs in London on Christmas Day

Hi all,

As I've said before, we are going to be in London over Christmas this year (two and a half weeks from now!!). I know that most everything is shut down for both Christmas and Boxing Day (We leave the morning of Boxing Day for Paris). We already have lunch reservations (and pre-paid) for Leman Street Tavern. We are hoping to do a little pub-hopping on Christmas day. Will there be many pubs open on Christmas day? We will be biking and walking for transportation, as the Tube, obviously, is out of service on Christmas.

There will be some open at lunchtime, fewer in the early evening, and even fewer as the night goes on. Some will be closed all day. Need to know the areas you are thinking of really.

In our area there were no pubs open. It is not like Germany when the beer hall become special focus points.

You might try The Hung, Drawn and Quartered, on Great Tower Street, on the corner. There is an excellent Indian restaurant next door to it, the Sripur, in case you are in need of food, and nothing else is open.

The Liberty Bounds is a Wetherspoons pub on the corner of Trinity Square and Tower Hill/Byward Street.

You should check with both of these pubs before Christmas Day, and ask if they will be open then. I don't know if these pubs will be open or closed. We ate and drank at both places during our May 2016 stay at Tower Hill, and were pleased with both pubs. Also liked the Indian restaurant.

Just checked their website. Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. But good news...open Christmas Eve and Dec. 27.

I am looking at the websites of some of my favorite pubs around Tower Hill, and finding nothing open Christmas Day in the afternoon and evening. Sorry.

Your best bet for finding a spot for a drink later in the day on Christmas Day may be the cafe or bar in the lobby of the hotels around Tower Hill. Surely some of these will be open and serving a pint or a drink.

As Emma says, pubs in residential areas are far more likely to be open on Christmas Day than ones in the centre of London. And the complete lack of public transport (the main reason why pubs outside residential areas shut) make it hard to reach those residential areas.

Not exactly a pub, but the All Bar One at Butler Wharf ( just across Tower Bridge from you) will be open. They are taking reservations for dinner from 17:00 to 22:00 but you should be able to stop in for just a drink if that is what you would like.

Maybe email them and ask.

You might try the Wellington pub, right outside of Waterloo station. It's got a hotel on the second floor and a large pub downstairs and is very likely to be open on Christmas Day. Just check their website. I do also know that the Globe, near Gloucester Road in Marylebone, is open on Christmas Day but that's a hike from where you are staying.

I was just checking the London Walks Company website to see if they will do a pub walk on Christmas Day. I do not see one listed, but found two other interesting walks.
http://www.walks.com/our-walks/walks-by-date#2016-12-25
*11:00--Christmas Morning, 1660--Samuel Pepys' London Walk
*14:00--The Christmas Day Charles Dickens London Walk
I know, I know; not the name of a pub that will be open, but something interesting to do.

They also do private walks, so maybe one of the guides listed here would do a pub walk with you on Christmas Day. You never know until you ask. Of course, they would know the pubs which are going to be open.

From the Dickens Walk page:
"The Charles Dickens Christmas Day walk starts at 2 pm. The meeting point is by the big Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square. (How appropriate is that?) N.B. the walk ends in Covent Garden, very near the Strand and Trafalgar Square. And yes, there are cafes and restaurants in the area that will be open on Christmas Day."
I would check pubs in the Trafalgar Square area and Covent Garden. It may be busier there on Christmas Day with tourists, so possibly some pubs may be open.
