Public Transport from BATH to WINDSOR

Can you advise the best way (easiest or scenic) way to travel from Bath to Windsor? From our research, it seems that trains require 2 changes which seem harder than expected. Apparently there are buses also. We will spend one night in Windsor (have been there once) and will travel by taxi to Heathrow the next day.

Suggestions by locals or fellow travelers are most welcome. We might even consider changing our plans to stay in Reading (have never been there) for one night if that seems a better plan. Thank you.

Windsor is on a branch line from Slough, which is west of London. Trains from Bath don't call at Slough so you need to change from the express train at Reading to a local train.

Reading has multiple platforms but escalators and elevators to the bridge. If you're really lucky you might not need to change platforms for the train to Slough, but even if you have to change it will be easy and well-signposted.

Once you get to Slough you will need to cross a footbridge again to get to the dead-end platform used by Windsor trains, but again it will be well-signposted and a short distance.

There is absolutely no reason to stay overnight in Reading and very little there of interest for a tourist.

Also, make sure you get a train ticket to Windsor and Eton CENTRAL station. The other station, Windsor and Eton Riverside, is on a different railway line and hard to get to from anywhere other than London.

Windsor is admittedly an awkward town to get to by rail, a quirk of how branch lines developed over time.

However it is not particularly challenging, both Reading and Slough will have plenty of staff to assist if required, but as the previous poster said, it will be well signposted.

I don't think there is any outstandingly scenic route but the National Express or Flixbus direct bus routes are a bit more scenic than the train.

If coming in on the train then you could do the last leg on the bus for a bit more scenery (a different way into the town)-
get off the Elizabeth line train at Maidenhead (as opposed to Slough) then the local bus #16 hourly from Maidenhead Station, or change at Reading onto a train for Waterloo, alight at Staines, then the local bus #10/10A hourly.

If I got my timings right then I could get off the same train at Ascot then the two hourly bus #1 from the station to Windsor- an especially good route in.

There are lots of buses in from Slough but that is a bit less convenient since Slough Bus Station burnt down and it is now various on street stops.
