Public Toilets in London

The topic of public toilets came up in another discussion that I began. Sooner or later, it is something that almost every tourist will have to think about.

Visit London actually has a very excellent article about Public Toilets in London which includes many other helpful links.

Every city should think of doing something similar.

Not necessarily public but ornate and the whole house is worth a view, the marble urinals at the John House and Wesley Museum.

Sharing as its rarely a must see site for tourists.

There are so many intriguing and little known museums in London.

I have only ever used the public toilets in Portobello Road--on market day, relatively clean and stocked with paper--and in Greenwich, which was distinctly from the Victorian era and possibly a bit scary, the toilets seemed to be leaking water all over the floor and there were signs posted re being wary of people soliciting for sex, so I got in and out very quickly and was glad I had extra napkins in my purse and wet wipes as there were no paper products to be found and the faucet wasn't working.

Back in the 1960s Jonathan Routh (who did Candid Camera in Britain) compiled "The good loo guide: Where to go in London", subsequently revised in the 1980s. Most of the dedicated council facilities in there are long gone but he also covered museums and hotels. Plus apparently at that time you could ask to use toilets inside Parliament & the American Embassy.

You might consider the app Flush. And the app City Toilet Finder (for the Square Mile only).

All pubs have toilets. Often they don't stop you from using it, even if you are not a customer - but who would not be a customer in a pub?
