Pros/Cons: MAN vs. LBA for trip to North York Moors and York

First of all, Happy New Year to all! May 2024 bring you much happiness!

I have been doing a bit of poking around on google flights looking at prices for a flight out of IAD. In a previous post you all brought up some great points about these airports, but I wanted to circle back bc I am seeing some really decent prices to MAN for the time we would go next year (‘25) - for example Aer Lingus RT is under $700 for mid-late May. Flying into LBA is about $250 more pp- which is still a good price I think. Just wondering if the savings would be worth arriving a little more distance away from Pickering (first stop) and York (tail end of trip). My thinking is having to purchase a longer train/bus ticket from the MAN airport to our destination may negate the airfare savings. Just curious what your thoughts were.

if the fare to MAN is that good it is a total no-brainer in my opinion. Bear in mind you have to get the bus from LBA to Leeds City first, it is under an hour extra journey time from MAN.
I will assume you would change from train to bus at York rather than Malton (or Leeds)- as York is by far the easiest transfer point.

A walk up fare Man Apt to York is £39 , from Leeds to York £15.50 on Northern only, or on any train £18.60 (sure advance fares come in as low as £4 or less, but difficult to time off an arriving flight). Add on the cost of the bus from LBA and there is about £15 difference.

If you used an Airport Advance Fare from MAN (which gives you 3 hours leeway for a late flight) MAN- Leeds, York or Malton would actually work out cheaper than a walk up fare from Leeds to York or Malton.

I presume that you are looking at fares for May 24 and assuming that they will be the same (and have the same difference) for May 25, which is a dangerous assumption. They may work out like that but there are no guarantees.

Having said that I would always choose MAN over LBA because of the train station at MAN rather than having to faff about with road transport from LBA first.

I was wondering if fares had any year to year potential to be similar. Just thought I would begin to compare the two airport flights/costs, but will keep your words of caution in mind, john. Those fares really make me want to change plans and go a year sooner, though!

Good information about the train/ bus connections comparison isn31c. I have to be reminded that all airports aren’t necessarily convenient to train stations when considering travel times.
