Proposed Withdrawal of London 1 Day Travelcards

The 6 month process to withdraw the use of 1 Day Travelcards on Transport for London services has now begun. Technically they would remain valid on National Rail services in the London Zones, but that seems to be an unlikely solution.

It is important to emphasize, as stated in the article attached, that this is not a final decision and the process may yet be reversed. However it seems that will only happen if TfL gets additional funding from central government.

Weekly and longer period travelcards will remain. If this does happen then Oyster and the various forms of Contactless and mobile payments, with their daily and weekly caps (and cash payments for individual tickets) will become the methods of payment by the day.

We will be in London from the US for one week in August. Would we be better off (cost less) purchasing one week Travelcards once we arrive or using our contact less credit card for the Tube, bus, etc. can we buy them at Heathrow? Paddington Station?

It depends on what days you are there. A weekly travelcard can be for any 7 day period. The weekly contactless cap is specifically and only from Monday to Sunday. You can buy the travelcard at Heathrow.

These inconvenience people most who have an out of boundary travel card, ie going into London from outside the London zones. Particularly if wanting to use some Railcards which don't have an Oyster discount. For those in London it is pretty marginal
