I'm considering hiring a private taxi from Heathrow to Bath for the start of our Rick Steves tour. Looks like it's 130-149 pounds depending on the company for 2 adults. The train/bus schedules look so exhausting after a long flight, it seems like it might be well worth it. Has anyone advice on these companies? One is a Bath-Heathrow transfer service. We are supposed to arrive at Heathrow on July 2 at 10am.
can't advise on a taxi but if you want to save a few quid there's a coach direct from LHR to Bath for £26

I have looked at that site and it looks like we could be stuck on a 4 plus hour trip through Bristol.... And then still need a local bus to arrive at the Brooks Guesthouse. Thanks for your reply!!! I'm just thinking of how many hours we would have been traveling from California.....
After a long flight, some jet lag, not being familiar with the area, there is nothing better than having your private driver meet you inside the terminal and whisk you to your hotel. No fending off unregistered cabs, waiting in the regular taxi line, transferring between busses and trains, or just having a "lost" feeling. A private car service is not the cheapest way, but it is definitely the best and well worth the little extra money. We recently used one based in Bath to go to another airport. Contact a James O'Neill at Chauffeur Travel and get a quote. Tel. number is 44 1225 463 404 from outside UK or go to www.chauffeurtravel.co.uk. We were very pleased with their service and will not hesitate to use them again.
Thank you very much!!
What may be best for you may depend on how long it takes to get through immigration+ at Heathrow. Allowing 2 hours would not be unreasonable.
After flying from Seattle, I took the National Express bus from Terminal 5. I bought my one-way ticket right there at Terminal 5 and my arrival worked with one of the straight shot 3 hour journeys. I took a taxi from the Bath bus station (right next to the train station) to my B&B. I chose the bus option because it was the least complicated and most reasonably priced one.
Sorry, but I can't imagine spending £130-£149 for a journey that will take about the same amount of time by car as by bus. Especially when there is a bus that leaves at 12:15, arrives in Bath at 15:30 and costs about £30 per person one way. There is a change at Terminal 2/3 with a 30 minute layover, a great coffee shop in the waiting area and toilets just outside the door.
I can see the temptation, but to me the cost of a private car far, far outweighs the benefits.
First, on the coaches: Not all take the same route, some are shorter than others. The coaches are comfortable and have wifi.
Second, there's the train. You can get on a train (not the underground) that goes to Waterloo, then change, but I actually chose a coach/train combo, switching from coach to train in Reading. I was operating on abt 4 hours sleep and a 7:30am Heathrow arrival but it wasn't difficult. I bought my tix online in advance ("anytime" tix, not tied to a specific departure time). It really is doable.
Another combo option is to take a regular taxi from Heathrow to a station where one of the Bath trains coming from London will stop.
I must agree with Lo. We are in our late 60s and know the rundown feeling the morning after a transatlantic flight. However, the cost of a private taxi at roughly $200 is over the top for us. For others, perhaps the cost is worthwhile. After all, some people spend four times what I do flying First Class.
The bus that was recommended doesn't look that tiring to manage.
The bus was perfect for us. We had a direct bus that stopped a couple times, if I remember correctly, and we were able to just relax and enjoy the countryside. When we got to the bus station in Bath, we walked a few blocks to our hotel, and it felt good to be moving. Take the bus!
