We're booked on one of the private guided tours of Buckingham Palace later in January. Has anyone been on one of these before? Wondering about how to dress -- is it the same as the summer tours where tourist-casual is fine, or should we gussy up a bit more? Avoid denim/trainers? Appearing as a tacky Yank is my worst nightmare.
Hi holidayjen, what company did you use to arrange the private guided tour? We will be in London in a few months and this sounds like something we'd be interested in. thanks!
Buckingham Palace only run these tours at certain times of the year, usually around Christmas (this year 15 Dec 2017 - Sunday, 4 Feb 2018 ) when The Queen is at Sandringham, and Easter. The general tours in the summer are when she is at Balmoral.
As long as you don't risk running into HM your tacky Yank costume should be OK. But I'd suggest dressing in the best clothes you'll be taking on the trip, just out of respect. Think of it the way you might think about visiting a church in Italy (though no risk of bare knees or shoulders in January).
I took the public tour in September and it was great, a private tour would have been better. Lucky you!
I agree with Dick -- if you'd rather not be perceived as a "tacky Yank" then wear slightly more businesslike clothes.
I have a fun memory of the time my husband and I visited the White House a few years ago. We dressed in business attire: sport jacket & tie for him, dress, nylons and sensible but heeled shoes for me. More than once during our visit, people came up very respectfully to ask us questions, thinking we worked there.
I took this tour a couple of days ago. No need to dress up, Just be presentable. Some of the group wore jeans and trainers. It was a really good tour and I hope you enjoy it.
Edit: definitely wear comfortable supportive shoes as you will be on your feet for two hours!
