I was planning to stay in Cardiff for a couple of nights, as my husband wants a taste of Wales. But since our trip is all about finding pretty walkable villages, I wondered if anyone has some suggestions for villages not too far past the border in the southern half of Wales.
Can I suggest you post this in the Wales Forum which might have more answers than England.....
I really like the Wye Valley (area of outstanding natural beauty status) and the Forest of Dean. Both fantastic areas for natural beauty, great walks and a plethora of little villages.
My mother-in-law lives there and on those rare occasions when I'm forced to visit we often stay in Symonds Yat at Rock Lodge http://www.rocklodge.co.uk, the kids love waking up in the morning to find sheep grazing just outside the door.
Much of the area inland between the English border and Cardiff comprises former coal mining towns and therefore this is not the prettiest part of Wales.
Monmouth on the border is worth a visit and is close to the Wye Valley as has already been mentioned. Further north, Hay on Wye is also good for walking.
Beyond Cardiff, the Gower peninsula has good coastal paths.
