Premier League tickets on Boxing Day

I am heading to London at Christmastime and would love to go see the West Ham v. Crystal Palace December 26 football match. Two questions: how does one buy a ticket and how do I tell if the train will be running on Boxing Day? I would need to go from West London (London Central hostel) to Selhurst Park. Thanks!

No trains with a few exceptions on Boxing Day. TfL buses and tubes will be running a service. Too early though for details.

Put 19th November in your diary, that's the date tickets go on sale via the Crystal Palace FC website although members are offered tickets 72hours in advance of this date so availability not guaranteed - the Boxing Day fixtures are very popular. You will need to buy in the Crystal Palace home ends - are you a fan or just looking for a London fixture? There are also lots of fixtures on 28th December that you could target but each club will have their own on sale dates so the above advice is only valid for the fixture you mention.

I hope that quest works out for you. I hate West Ham and I love The Eagles. Dust off your copy of the Dave Clark Five's Greatest Hits and please tell Wally and The Beav I said Hello.

I'd contact the club now, and ask if there is any possibility as a foreign fan, to apply for tickets early.

As a gut feeling, and as a regular at football games (but not in the Premiership for some time) is that you have a very low chance unless you are prepared to pay large amounts of money for "corporate hospitality"

Boxing day is nearly always a game against local rivals, and is nearly always sold out. Selhurst park is a small ground.

Good luck, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Thanks to everyone for all your helpful advice! I am looking to see West Ham play and I think they play also at home on the 28th so I will check on that, too. Thanks to all of you for your helpful (and humorous!) replies

The West Ham Game on the 28th is a far more likely bet. The London Stadium hold double the numbers of Selhurst Park, and Leicester are not quite as likely to be such a draw as another London Club.

Eddie, are you already a member of West Ham? If not consider getting a Claret Membership and then waking up early to book on the day when sales open up for Claret members. With this strategy, you should probably be able to get a decent seat. Claret members get a discount on tickets, which will help to offset the membership cost a bit.

Edited to add If you decide to use this strategy, join as soon as possible so you can get your card number well in advance of the opening of sales for Claret members. Also confirm in advance which tel number you should use to book your ticket...they may have a special number, since a 333 number may not work from overseas.

As a member of another Premier League club, I recommend calling to book your ticket rather than using the website. My US credit card has been consistently declined at my club website, and since you’re competing for a limited number of seats, you won’t want to waste time. The telephone box office will be able to get a cc approval. You may have to redial a few times to connect, but how exciting to be at your club fixture in the festive season!

If West Ham is the team you support then definitely avoid watching them at Selhurst Park on Boxing Day. If you can't help celebrating a goal you may well get ejected from the ground! Plus travel will be easier. Follow advice above about becoming a member if you can afford and are keen, remember tickets will be going on sale UK times so you may want to stay up late or wake up early!

Palace surprisingly are very difficult to get tickets to. Small park and well supported club. I don’t know what Hospitality packages Palace offer but that’s always your best bet as a non supporter. The issue for you is most clubs are very strict on support in Hospitality seating. You will be expected to support the home side and no away side colors or scarves will be allowed.

If the Irons are home the 28th, just attend that match. Super easy to get West Ham tickets on general sale.

If you really want to attend a match on Boxing Day, see if one of the Championship sides are home - Fulham, Brentford, Charlton or Millwall.
