I have spent more hours than I care to admit looking for a 6-night stay in London in September. Have contacted several boutique hotel and home stays that I thought I would like only to find they have no openings on the dates I selected. Finally decided to just go with the ever-popular Premier Inns. A little more than I had thought to pay, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for my husband and myself and I need to just make a decision and move on. Had read on many of the choices, but failed to take extensive notes and now the search history on my web browser is not working, so I cannot look back on some of the things I have read. Three that I was particularly interested in were St. Pancras, Euston, and Kensington. I would like to be near a tube station for sure, not sure how important bus connections are for us. Seems like most Premier Inns are fairly soundproofed, otherwise noise might figure into a decision. It would be nice to be near grocery, atms, places to pick up take-away food. This is a first-time trip to London, would like to keep things as simple as possible. Can't convince my husband to just travel with carry-on's, so we may pay for a mini-cab from Heathrow. Don't know if some of the Premier Inn locations would be cheaper in that respect. I expect to spend about three days in zone 1, and one day at Kew and Hampton Court. Maybe one day at Hampstead Heath and/or possible day trip out of London if we schedule our time right. Some of the Premier Inns seem to list luggage storage, but not all. Think the three I had mentioned all do. That is a big factor, too. Will be arriving at hotel before check-in time on our day of arrival. Haven't made our airline reservations yet, so if we could leave our luggage at hotel, we might be able to squeeze in a little bit more time in London on our departure day.
The St Pancras and Euston ones are very close to each other on the Euston Road between Euston and St Pancras stations. The area has good transport links but is not very attractive to tourists (apart from the British Library) and still has some areas close by that tourists would be ill-advised to stray into (OK if you are used to maintaining environmental awareness in big cities, potentially a problem if you are from a small town). Euston Road is also a VERY busy and noisy road so I would be reluctant to stay at either if you are sensitive to traffic noise, even given Premier Inn soundproofing.
There are two Premier Inns in Kensington, suffixed Earls Court and Olympia. The Olympia one is also on a major road, the Earls Court one appears to have a quieter location and is closer to a tube station. (One issue looking on Google Maps is that it might be sufficiently close to the tube line to have problems with underground vibration.)
I've stayed in the area very close to the Premier Inn Kensington Earl's Court. I like that area, which has, with lots of shopping nearby including grocery stores and also lots of restaurants. The hotel is near the Tube line but they note on their website, "This hotel is near a trainline so we've insulated our rooms to help you get a great night's sleep." It's located straight down a side street from the Earl's Court tube station. The website didn't mention luggage storage. http://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/hotels/england/greater-london/london/london-kensington-earls-court.html?cid=GLBC_LONKEN
I'm not familiar with the Olympia location. It's farther out than the Earl's Court hotel.
My wife and I just returned from Europe and stayed five days in London, all of which were at a Premier Inn (Victoria Station). All in all, we were in London for a holiday and didn't spend a ton of time in our room, so we didn't feel as if we were missing out on anything by staying there. The room was clean, well maintained close to a the train station/tube stop/ buses (but not on a busy street, so noise wasn't an issue) as well as a grocery store and several pubs and restaurants.
Enjoy your trip!
My favorite Premier Inns in which I've stayed are:
1. Premier Inn London County Hall
http://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/hotels/england/greater-london/london/london-county-hall.html
Right by the London Eye, and a short walk across Westminster Bridge to Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abbey and the Churchill War Rooms.
2. Premier Inn London Southwark (Bankside)
Near Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Tate Modern Museum, Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market. Walking distance to the Tower Bridge and Tower of London. Walk north from the hotel across the river to St. Paul's Cathedral.
Both locations are well-served by buses and a couple of tube stations. I think you would be pleased with the location of either of these hotels. Both hotels serve a good breakfast, but it is not free with the room. You have a choice to book just a room, or room and breakfast when making your reservation.
From either of these hotels you can walk to many of the tourist sights so on some days you may not need a bus or the tube.
You can also use the river taxis that are moored at Westminster Bridge to take you up and down the river. Going east, the river boats will take you to the Tower of London or on to Greenwich. Going west, the river boats will take you to Kew Gardens. The Thames Clipper boats are inexpensive to ride. They take the same Oyster card that you use for the tube or bus. Just tap in when you get on.
Have you tried The London Elizabeth Hotel or The Falcon Hotel? Both great hotels in great locations.
I've stayed at the St. Pancras Premier Inn and found it to be very satisfactory. Despite it being located on a very busy road I had no issues with noise and got a good nights sleep. Premier Inn offer an incentive if you did not get a good nights sleep then you can be refunded the cost of the stay.
County Hall, Waterloo, Southwark Bankside, Fleet Street, Bank and Holborn would be my favourite PI locations.
Euston & St Pancras are fine too - very busy road, excellent transport links, near Bloomsbury. I think the area is extremely safe too - Kings Cross (nearby) was a red light District about 20 years ago but has had huge investment and it's all very nice and safe around there (biggest risk is getting hit by a bus crossing Euston Road).
Thanks, everyone. So great to have such helpful people on this forum!
I second Premier Inn County Hall. That was an excellent location. We had a great stay in April 2015. So close to the London Eye and right across the bridge is Westminster/Big Ben.
We have stayed at the Premier Inn Earl's Court and found it quiet and very convenient for the tube station.
County Hall location really can't be beat if you want to look out your window and see the sights. London Eye, Big Ben, Parliament, the Thames - right at your fingertips and Westminster Tube stop is just across the bridge.
However - have you looked at the Hub Hotel Westminster? Literally right around the corner from Westminster and tube stop across the street:
https://www.hubhotels.co.uk/london/westminster-st-james-park.html
Affordable, new, clean - you can't beat it.
But attention, the Hub Hotels from Premier Inn are a little bit of a different animal -- be aware that they are VERY small rooms. Can be fine if you know that, but be aware before booking.
I have not stayed at any of your options. But, My husband likes County Hall and so do I. I also like Borough Market and the neighborhood (Southwark) and there are lots of things to do there. I have just answered a poster who asked about chains hotels. We took the Express to (help! is it Paddington) and a taxi to the hotel. The taxi cost about 40 GBP .. I felt it was a bargain for 3 people and all of our luggage. The nearest tube is a couple of blocks, but you get to walk past the market.
I'm also a fan of Premier Inns and have used them many times, all through the UK . One quick tip about the County Hall location - As far as I'm aware , it does not have air conditioning , perhaps it has been retrofitted . Right across the street is a new ( 2014 ) Premier at the old Lying - In Hospital , which is fully air conditioned . Something to consider , London - Waterloo ( Westminster Bridge )
My husband and I have stayed at the Premier Inn Olympia in both 2015 and 2016. We found the rooms to be very comfortable and quiet, even though the hotel is right next to a very busy road. It's about a 15 minute walk from the Earls Court tube station, and there are a lot of restaurants nearby to choose from. Another plus is that it is a straight shot from Heathrow on the Piccadilly Line; and the Earls Court Station has lifts, which really help when dealing with luggage.
