We will be arriving by National coach at about 11AM in Southampton on a Friday morning in May before a Norwegian fjord cruise. Other than walking can anyone recommend things that would interest two seniors & adult son who is a history buff. Would visiting Winchester to tour the cathedral & town be manageable by bus or uber?
There are three trains an hour from Southampton to Winchester, also a city bus route, Bluestar #1 every 15 minutes.
There are also two trains an hour to Salisbury and a city bus #X7 every two hours.
When does your cruise start?
For history buffs, the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is extremely interesting. It is accessible by bus and takes 2-3 hours at the site to appreciate. Look up the Mary Rose and the HMS Victory. These are both present there.
Our cruise leaves the following day May 10 so we will have a bit of time to walk about Southampton that morning. Winchester looked perfect for an afternoon followed by dinner in a pub where we can enjoy some of the local beers before heading to the Leonardo Hotel on Charlotte . I’ve learned from past trips to try to be active following overnight flights and avoid the temptation to nap.
In addition to the cathedral and exhibits related to the Jane Austen 250, the City of Winchester offers two walking tours most days. One in the morning and one afternoon.
Chances are that the first stop for the bus from Heathrow will be Winchester, we're they use a park and ride site. By definition there will be frequent buses from there into the city.
I am assuming you are on Service #205 leaving Heathrow Bus Station at 0930.
