Prior to the RS trip, we would love arrive a few days early to visit Sherborne Village (in the Cotswolds area, not in the south) to visit Sherborne House and Mary Magdalene Church adjoining Sherborne House (the latter of which, we understand, has been converted to flats). Would our best bet be to travel to/stay in Bath and book a vehicle and drive to Sherborne Village? Or, do we take the train from London to Morten-in-Marsh and take a hired car to Sherborne Village? If the latter, how do we get back down to Bath?? Or...other options that would better suit our needs??? Recommendations for accommodations in the Sherborne Village???
I think a train from London to Cheltenham Spa seems best if you want to do it that way, then pre-booked taxi there and back to Sherborne. Cheltenham is just over an hour by train from Bath, change at Bristol Temple Meads.
It seems that the nearest place to stay is in Northleach, but you would still need a taxi as the bus service leaves a lot to be desired. The bus to Sherborne is all but non existent.
I suspect that the easiest, most practical and likely most cost efficient answer is a day's car hire from Bath.
Go to Bath from the airport by bus or train (refer numerous other threads), do whatever else you want to do in Bath, then a day's car hire for Sherborne.
Thank you for the feedback, very much appreciated. We were thinking a vehicle hire would be the best option overall, even though we weren't keen on driving (being from Canada, driving in the UK can be a little challenging). In the end, we'll simply chalk it up to another adventure to add to our travels. Thanks again!
