Post Brexit travel

I was in London 2018, and will return this fall. What will travelers notice has changed?

I have visited London twice since Brexit, the latest last December 2023. I didn’t notice anything significantly different that was Brexit related. The biggest change I noticed is that I can now use my ApplePhone/Watch or credit card on the Underground instead of an Oyster card.

I noticed no changes other than that mentioned above.

The big changes are for UK citizens - unavailability of EU entry lines, for instance. I was just talking to a London friend who wished to ship a musical instrument that contains ivory to an EU location. Prior to Brexit, he claimed this was easy; now full of paperwork and "angst".

Maybe some of the UK residents will respond to your question.

There won’t be any difference for someone arriving from outside the EU. The only differences concern travel and business arrangements within the EU.

One change is that here is no longer tax free shopping where visitors from outside the EU could claim a VAT rebate on purchases. This is still available within the EU.

Definitely set up ApplePay or GooglePay if you don't already have it. Also explore the TFL website on using the contactless CCs on the Tube as mentioned above. I think this is more related to post-pandemic travel and not post-Brexit travel.

The one thing that could affect you is if you plan to take the Eurostar. Before Brexit it was only people like US citizens that had to deal with a procedure to enter the Schengen zone before getting on the train. Now it's UK citizens as well and as a result you are now recommended to arrive at St Pancras 90 minutes before the train departs. it was much shorter before.

As a visitor you'll not notice any changes. Depending on your nationality you'll likely enter the UK via e-gates and unless you're planning on using the aforementioned Eurostar you'll not notice any Brexit related difference to your visit in 2018.

The biggest change I noticed was not seeing the EU flag displayed at big hotels.

That is a good point about Eurostar. I’ve also found myself just giving more time for everything post Covid regardless of international travel or domestic
