Possible to rent car if passport doesn’t match license?

I got myself all hyped to have the courage to rent a car and just remembered my passport is not in my married name

Any clue if I’d still be able to rent a car?? Bring marriage certificate?

Both license and passport are valid…obviously both have photo of me. Should I even bother trying?

Leaving Saturday. Just booked the trip a few days ago

Thanks!

when you decide where you want your rental car and find a company doing that, you could ask them before you make the reservation.

I was able to rent in Italy. My passport has my married name while my license had my maiden name.

I called Enterprise in Edinburgh and she seemed to think I’ll be ok just being marriage certificate to be safe. Oh wow…friendliest representative EVER!

I think you'll find that a lot in Scotland. From my experience the Scots are the friendliest people in the world and 2nd place isn't even close. Thinking back on it, I don't recall the guy at the renal desk asking for my passport; just my license. But always be prepared if you anticipate a potential problem. I would recommend you go through Celtic Legend https://www.celticlegend.co.uk/car-rental/, they are very accommodating and very patient and helpful with all questions.

I second Allan’s advice to go through Celtic Legend. In addition to the best price I found they were very responsive to questions and a dream to work with. The actual rental was with Arnold Clark and they picked us up at our Glasgow hotel and transported us, 4 adults and our luggage, to pick the car up. When we returned the car in Inverness they transported back to our B&B.

Picked up car at Alamo/enterprise on May 4th and they only looked at my driver's license to verify is valid. Wonderful experience with these folks. Enjoy a great trip!

I agree with the others. I have never been asked to show my passport when renting a car in Europe, much less the UK. You should be fine. :-)

Just to throw this stink bomb into the mix, you should probably have a IDP available from your friendly local AAA

This may be prudent some places, but entirely unnecessary in the UK and Ireland AFAIK.

An IDP is a translation of a driver's license that is not in the language of the country being traveled to. Since England and the US share a common language, there is no need for an IDP.

Can the IDP be issued with both former and married name, to ease the name issue? Even though it is not needed, would it be helpful?

I've been asked to provide my passport number renting a car in Europe - which isn't quite the same as showing a passport. (One memorable time the passports were in the money belt but we had the numbers on paperwork in our hands. The agent just wanted the numbers - didn't need to actually see the passports so I didn't fish them out.)
